About Katie

Kia ora, my name is Katie and I have been learning piano since the age of four. In 2024 I completed my Bachelor of Music at the University of Canterbury and am continuing my studies in Law and Honours Music this year. Piano is my primary instrument but I have also taken violin and drum kit lessons, so I have an appreciation for a range of instruments. I have had around 5 years of one-on-one teaching experience privately at home and at schools. It is an honour to be able to share my passion and love for music with others.

About the lesson

Lessons are personalised and aimed towards the specific needs and goals of each student. Whether the student is aiming to complete ABRSM or Trinity exams, or learn simply for fun, I ensure they receive the most out of their lessons.

My lessons involve warm-up exercises which establish the fundamental techniques of note reading and playing. The student may then work through scales, aural, sight-reading and theory as per the their level or grade. Beginner students will expect to learn 1-2 basic pieces per week while intermediate/higher level students can focus on more advanced pieces over several lessons. I allow the student an input in the structure of their lesson as well as the pieces they choose to learn as I firmly believe that students learn best when the lessons feel personalised and inclusive.

I am a classically trained pianist and completed all levels of Trinity piano from Initial to Grade 8, ultimately attaining my ATCL performance diploma in 2019. In recent years several of my students have successfully completed Grade 1-8 exams under ABRSM and Trinity, with majority achieving Distinction.

Lesson lengths are catered personally to the student and can be of 30 min, 45 min, or 60 min length.
