About Jacob
I am currently a mechanical engineering student and a member of the BYU Men's Chorus and BYU's Duly Noted a cappella group. I love music (singing, piano, cello, etc), and I've played the piano for about 16 years. I was classically trained, and since most of my family plays piano as well, I love learning and performing advanced piano duets with them.
As a teenager I participated in the National Piano Playing Auditions, scoring highly four years in a row. I also played piano in the high school Honors Jazz Band for a year, in addition to lessons and practicing outside of school.
I'm dedicated to being a reliable tutor by being prepared for lessons, staying organized, and having consistent communication so we're both on the same page. One of my favorite parts of teaching is seeing the "a-ha moment" and the joy students get when a concept finally clicks. I hope to be able to bring that joy to you by creating a fun, encouraging environment where you can find confidence and success!

Having taught piano lessons to kids throughout high school, I typically like to work with one of the following piano book sets: Bastien Piano Basics, Alfred's Basic Piano Library, or Faber Piano Adventures. For technical skills I love to use the Hanon piano exercises book. We'll combine classical repertoire with "fun songs" you want to learn, while building technical skills with scales/finger exercises and covering theory foundations such as cadences, chords, and song structure.
Lessons usually begin with a technique warm-up, and then I'll have you play through your pieces and I'll give you clear, helpful feedback. We'll also cover a theory topic, and I'll help explain it in a way that makes sense to you.
I generally do lessons once a week, with the expectation that you'll practice at least 4-5 days a week. Depending on your skill level, lessons are either 30 or 45 minutes, and I'll ask you to practice between 15 and 45 minutes per day.
No matter your age or skill level, I'll help you build a strong technical foundation and increase your skills and confidence as a pianist!
