You might be interested in starting taking yoga lessons with an instructor online, but there is not just one type of yoga, there are several and this might have you a bit confused. So let us talk about the different types of yoga that there are and what they are all about.
Let’s talk about six of the most common types of yoga: Hatha, Vinyasa, Ashtanga, Iyengar, Bikram and Yin.
Hatha yoga is a foundational yoga. The instructor guides you in detail about the poses and the right placement of your body, the right position and in general covers in detail the most important part of each pose.
Vinyasa yoga, sometimes called flow yoga as well, is a type of yoga where the goal is to make a sequence that flows naturally. Unlike Hatha, where you move from one pose and then to another pose and so on, with Vinyasa you flow in a sequence from one pose to the next without really resetting. Also with Vinyasa you don’t spend much time in each pose.
Ashtanga yoga is similar to Vinyasa yoga, where you go from one pose to another in a certain flow, but the difference is that with Ashtanga you always practice the set series or sequences that are always practiced with Ashtanga.
Iyengar yoga is similar to Hatha yoga in that you are going to hold the poses for a longer duration, the instructor is going to go into a lot of detail related to the poses to make sure you are holding the poses correctly, even more detail than Hatha. And with Iyengar you are going to use props. Iyengar is all about precision and therefore is a bit more strict.
Bikram yoga or hot yoga is a controversial yoga due to the abusive behaviour from its creator, Bikram Choudhury towards his students. This is why some teachers and studios are moving away from this practice and not supporting it anymore. Bikram yoga is a very determined yoga practice; it lasts 90 minutes in a room at forty celsius degrees.
Yin yoga is quite different from all other styles. Yin is a relaxing, slow, restorative practice. Each pose is going to be held for a long time and so you start with your body on the ground with not much demand of strength or force. Rather than building strength Yin yoga focuses on flexibility and stretching.
The best type of yoga, as an introductory yoga, is Hatha yoga because Hatha yoga focuses on building the foundation of your practice. The yoga instructor goes into a lot of detail about the poses as you are holding them.
The second best would be Ashtanga yoga, but this could be more challenging physically. The benefit of Ashtanga is that you see more clearly the progress that you have had. This is because you are always practicing the same series of poses and therefore you can see the evolution and the ease that you have developed in relation to the sequences or individual poses.
Lastly, the third best for beginners would be Yin yoga, as this yoga focuses on flexibility and elasticity, instead of building strength. Each pose is held for a long time and the idea is to breathe into a state of ease with each pose.
Vinyasa might not be the best option for a complete beginner simply because the teacher does not have the time to explain each pose since the purpose of this type of yoga is to flow from one pose to the next one.
If you are interested in taking yoga lessons, starting with lessons online might be the best option for you. Learning online with an online yoga instructor will show you the ropes and it will feel like the lesson is tailored to your challenges, your interest and your natural tendencies.
Finding an online yoga instructor is also quite easy. Visit Superprof and type down the type of yoga you’d like to learn as well as your location. Because you are looking for lessons online you could type any place in New Zealand. Each teacher will have an ad specifically mentioning if they teach online or just in person. Browse through the long catalog of teachers who are offering online yoga lessons and find the one that is best for you.
