Learn how to play piano in the city of Rotorua

Learning to play the piano is on so many Rotovegas bucket lists. It’s why apps that advertise they can teach you to be a master pianist in only a few short weeks stay in business.

However, we all know that to play any instrument takes motivation – and that’s one of the best reasons to talk to a piano tutor in Rotorua.

Did you have lessons as a kid, but have forgotten all you learnt? Or do you just wish you could add a little music to your life? There are so many great reasons to learn piano, and not a single bad one, no one ever regretted learning to play the piano.

Find the best piano teacher in Rotorua

Don’t get caught up in the different “methods” of piano teaching. Falling down the trap of worry about the difference between the Suzuki, Kodály, Alfred or Faber & Faber methods of learning an instrument distracts from your main goal – to learn to play the piano.

Piano teachers will often explain what their method of teaching is, or what school of teaching they have learnt from, but that will not make much difference to any beginner pianist.

At the end of the day, you are sitting at a piano or keyboard in Rotorua, wanting to play beautiful music on the black and white keys – and all methods will teach you this.

One difference is the style of music you will be learning. While most piano tutors will start with quite simple classical pieces of music, some will also be more open to teaching you the songs you want to play and working out a lesson plan that develops your playing ability while you learn the pieces that appeal to you.

Are you listening to piano music?

While you are beginning to play make sure you are listening to recordings of the style of music you want to be able to play. You can find these on YouTube and Spotify of course, but the key is that you are spending time listening to the piano parts of the music.

This will make it easier for you to know when you are playing correctly, help you learn to stay in time, and help you improve your playing. Note – this doesn’t mean that you will be playing magically overnight, you will still need to practice!

Playing piano when you can’t read music

This is one reason to listen to as much of the music as you want to be able to play, it helps you to learn when you’re playing the right notes and to develop your timing. In fact, the “listen and learn” style of teaching is popular with teaching string instruments – and piano is a string instrument.

Being able to read a piano score, piano music notation, is something that will come with practice and time. But it is something that new musicians can find a little scary.

Sadly, primary school music in New Zealand has taught children just enough music to be afraid without teaching them enough to enjoy learning music.

You may know that all notes have names, but what a great Superprof piano teacher will show you is that those little notes are just showing you where to put your fingers. In much the same way as people learn to touch type, move a player in counterstrike or drive a car, you don’t need to know the names of the notes to find them on the keyboard.

Why everyone in Rotorua should play piano

Because we are so musical, there are a lot of piano tutors out there, but not all are great – or at least, not all will work well with you. This, sadly, is often what has put people off when they have found a super cheap piano tutor on Facebook.

The better way to find a piano teacher is by using word of mouth, which is what Superprof does effectively. Working through reviews and detailed descriptions of how each piano teacher works helps you find who is going to fit your desire to learn, your budget and your location.

If you live near Lake Rotoiti, you don’t really want to drive to Tihiotonga or Ngongotahā Valley for a piano lesson.

Playing piano works with the entire range of music, teaching you chords like a guitarist and melody like a singer, then putting them all together like a band or orchestra. We are so lucky to have amazing musicians in Rotorua, music is in our blood.
