About Alexander
Alexander Lee Shaneyfelt is a classical pianist and composer whose work reflects a deep engagement with the classical piano tradition, integrating composition and piano improvisation alongside contemporary musical expression. His repertoire spans a wide range of historical styles, from Baroque and Classical keyboard literature to Romantic, Impressionist, and modern works. In addition to performing established repertoire, he frequently presents his own original compositions.
Primarily a solo pianist, Shaneyfelt performs repertoire ranging from Baroque keyboard works by J. S. Bach, Handel, and Scarlatti to major works of the Classical and Romantic piano literature, including Beethoven’s Appassionata Sonata and Chopin’s Ballade No. 3, as well as Impressionist and modern works such as Debussy’s Pour le Piano. In addition to his solo work, he has appeared in chamber and collaborative settings, including participation in the Winold Music Festival (2025), and has provided live piano music for private events such as the 59th Ybor City Chamber Gala.
Alongside his performance work, Shaneyfelt is active as a composer, writing music ranging from solo piano works, including When the World Goes Silent, to larger orchestral compositions such as The Tempest and On a Midsummer’s Eve.
In addition to performing and composing, Shaneyfelt is active as a piano instructor, teaching private students of varying ages and experience levels in the Tampa area from his home studio and online.
He began his professional teaching career in October 2024 as a private piano instructor at Rooted in Music Studio, where he worked with students of varying levels and assisted in facilitating studio recitals. During this time, he developed professional relationships with musicians including owner and pianist Elisabet Fandiño, as well as pianist and composer Mason Kistler. Shaneyfelt now teaches independently from his home studio in South Tampa and online.
Shaneyfelt began studying piano at the age of thirteen, initially through self-study before continuing his training at the Musical Arts Piano Conservatory under Judith Cataldo, an alumna of the Manhattan School of Music and the New England Conservatory. During his studies, he participated in numerous recitals, festivals, and competitions, graduating in 2021 with an accredited high school diploma in piano performance with high honors.
In 2023, he continued his musical studies at the Boston Conservatory at Berklee, focusing on music composition. In 2024, he enrolled in the Music and Performing Arts program at Hillsborough Community College, studying classical piano performance with Kenneth Hanks (Peabody Conservatory) and composition and jazz piano with composer and pianist Simon Lasky. During this time, he participated in the Florida Winter Music Symposium (2025, 2026), receiving awards of Artistic Merit and Recognition, and was named Performer of the Semester in Fall 2025. He will graduate with an Associate of Arts degree in Piano Performance in 2026.
Beginning in Fall 2026, Shaneyfelt will continue his studies in piano performance at the University of Tampa with Dr. Gregorios Zamparas.
Through performance, pedagogy, and composition, his work seeks to connect the depth of classical tradition with contemporary musical exploration.

My approach to teaching is rooted in the belief that learning music is not simply about playing the piano, but about developing a way of thinking—one that is structured, intentional, and deeply engaged with the process of growth.
I place a strong emphasis on musicianship. This means understanding what one is playing, not just how to play it. Technique, interpretation, and musical awareness are developed together, not in isolation. Alongside this, creativity is treated as an essential part of learning. Improvisation and composition are not separate from traditional study, but extensions of it—ways of internalizing and expressing musical ideas more fully.
Students are not expected to begin with professional goals. A beginner is not being trained under the assumption that they will become a concert pianist. Instead, lessons are shaped around the individual—what they are interested in, what they are capable of, and what they are working toward. At the same time, I believe that meaningful progress requires direction. Regardless of background, students follow a disciplined and goal-oriented path of development so that their efforts build toward something lasting.
A lesson provides structure, feedback, and guidance, but real progress takes place between lessons. Learning an instrument is not a passive process. It requires consistent effort, attention, and the willingness to engage with difficulty. I will never ask a student to do something impossible, but I will regularly ask them to do things that are challenging. That is where growth occurs.
Especially in younger students, music develops something far more valuable than the ability to play an instrument. It cultivates the ability to work toward long-term goals, to approach problems methodically, and to find fulfillment in gradual improvement rather than immediate results. In a world that often prioritizes speed and ease, this is a rare and important skill.
My goal as a teacher is not only to help students play the piano, but to help them become independent musicians—capable of understanding, exploring, and genuinely engaging with music on their own.
