About Erin
Teaching experience:
I have been teaching piano and theory privately to both children and adults since 2008. Some I have taught as complete beginners and others have come to me having learnt with other teacher(s) previously. During this time I have entered pupils for both theory and practical ABRSM exams, passing with an average mark of 124/150 (merit) for practical exams and 90/100 (distinction) for theory exams. I also have experience of teaching pupils as young as 3 through games, singing, story-telling and crafts.
My own musical training and performing experience:
I began my musical training at the age of six and was inspired to consider a career in music following a chance meeting with a Canadian pianist at the age of sixteen.
I was awarded an ATCL diploma in solo performance in 2002 and from 2003 to 2006 studied music at Birmingham University, specialising in performance and composition and studying with David Quigley. Alongside my academic studies, I was performing regularly both as a soloist and accompanist, including accompanying the University Chamber Choir and Guild Musical Theatre Society as well as achieving First Prize in the 2005 “Vale of Glamorgan Young Musician of the Year”. From an early age, I have been a regular participant at the Chethams International Summer School for Pianists and Birmingham International Piano Academy and was awarded scholarships for the high standard of my playing. Since then, I have maintained my musical training and performed in a number of public masterclasses with renowned concert pianists John Lill and Martin Roscoe; I have also had occasional lessons with concert pianists such as Noriko Ogawa, Dina Parakhina, the late Jose Ferghali and Murray McLachlan.
Following graduation from Birmingham University, I continued my music studies at Trinity College of Music in London and successfully completed a Masters in piano performance, studying with Hilary Coates. With a keen interest in a variety of musical genres, it was at this time that I became in regular demand as a wedding and function pianist, performing at various venues in and around London, including The Berkeley Hotel in Knightsbridge, Selfridges Department store, the French Ambassador’s Residence, Wilton’s Music Hall, The Landsdowne Club in Mayfair and Eltham Palace.
I continue to enjoy a varied career to this day, primarily dividing my time between performing, accompanying and teaching. Recent work has included regular engagements with the Maidstone Operatic Society, culminating in a 6 show run of ‘The Witches of Eastwick’ at the Hazlitt Theatre and a forthcoming production of ‘Sweet Charity’. My collaborative work has focused primarily on accompanying dancers for ballet classes, workshops, seminars and ISTD graded and vocational exams. In addition to this, I still enjoy collaborating with and performing with other musicians and singers, most prominently with the noted saxophonist, Steph Legg. Recent performances with Steph Legg have included an evening of 30s & 40s music at The Tea Box in Richmond and a performance for the Little Birdsong Orchestra at Bush Hall, which were very well received.

Whilst I aim to make lessons as fun and engaging as possible, my ultimate aim is for students to flourish as confident and independent learners. This can only be done by establishing solid foundations and developing a depth of knowledge and understanding of the subject from the outset.
Depending on the age and level of the student, lessons will typically include:
* learning pieces
* theory work
* sight-reading
* duet playing
* exercises to improve technique
* rhythm work
* general musicianship
However, lessons are tailored to suit the individual.
I encourage all new students to have a trial lesson first so that they can decide whether my teaching style is for them or not.
I travel to students' homes. (Travel costs are included in the fees).
I am DBS checked as a Private Music Teacher through the Incorporated Society of Musicans (ISM) of which I am a member.
Please do get in touch if you have any questions.
