About Edward

I have an enormous wealth of knowledge and experience to share to help you achieve amazing progress along your piano playing journey. I'm a highly experienced teacher across the whole musical spectrum -- from jazz, through pop, rock, and soul, to classical -- and I bring to piano tuition the full breadth of my practical experience as a pianist, songwriter, and composer.

I hold an ATCL classical piano diploma with distinction, a first-class BA in Music from the University of Oxford, and I recently completed with distinction an MA specialising in jazz performance at the prestigious Royal Academy of Music. I have taught piano extensively and have also worked as an accompanist for singers in showcases and concerts, as a session musician in recording studios, as a side person in small jazz combos and big bands, and as a performing concert musician.

I have 7 years' teaching experience both privately and in schools and have delivered over 1500 piano lessons to students ranging from beginners to Grade 8 level and from 11 years' to 90+ years' old. I also previously worked as a private tutor offering 1-1 tuition for Music GCSE exam candidates.

About the lesson

I can help with exam preparation; aural, sight-reading, and improvisation skills; songwriting, composing, and arranging; transcription; repertoire; interpretation; technique; and theory. I support students no matter their commitment level or pace of learning emphasising love of the music from lesson #1.

Unless the student prefers an ad hoc approach, I structure piano lessons in a methodical way that encourages the student to develop his/her ability to learn music both by reading notation and by ear. For beginners I recommend the Alfred All-in-One course that integrates repertoire, theory, technique, and knowledge of musical fundamentals. By the end of the course, the student has attained a sound foundation (roughly equivalent to Grade 3/4 level) in piano playing, upon which we can then build by choosing repertoire together from a vast array of pieces and songs according to the student's interests.

For more experienced students and those completing the course, further repertoire/study options include ABRSM study pieces (Grades 3-8); Bach inventions; Clementi sonatinas; Chopin nocturnes; film score arrangements; composing original music; classic pop/rock songs through the ages; popular hymns and folk tunes; jazz standards/Great American Songbook; bebop/hard bop/modal jazz; funk/groove.

Perfect! Ed is a fantastic piano tutor! His ability to assess where I'm at, identify what would help most, and to shape exercises and lesson plans around what I want to be able to play and what I enjoy has made practicing fun again.
He's also very welcoming and easy-going, and clearly a seriously talented and knowledgeable pianist. Looking forward to many more lessons, thanks Ed!

Perfect! Ed is a fantastic piano tutor. He is patient, very encouraging, and has a wonderful knack of getting the most out of me as an adult learner.

His lessons are always enjoyable, and he is very flexible regarding which pieces we choose to work on. I cannot recommend him highly enough.

Perfect! It is too early to say, but I feel very happy with his notion of the ideal learning plan, and that is worth a five.

Perfect! If you’re looking for someone to demystify music and create fun positive and encouraging lessons then Edward is the person. Ed has a fantastic approach to teaching; he has tailored our lessons in an unconventional structure to suit my needs as a musician and songwriter. I’ve been a student of Ed for 2 months and since we began our lessons my understanding of music theory and technique have accelerated. I had sense of drudgery when it came to music theory but Ed’s clear passion for music and his own creativity as a musician has meant that with encouragement and a space to learn, I have a new approach to how I write my songs. I couldn’t recommend him more.

Thanks Ed !

As someone who has been playing keyboards on and off for many years but who had never had a formal piano lesson, I thought lessons would be ‘fine tuning’,..how wrong I was. Ed has opened my eyes to years of bad habits and has taught me so much in a relatively short period. He is (very) patient, very knowledgeable and (obviously) an excellent pianist. Lessons are flexibly structured lessons to suit my background and interests, and we learn and progress through playing appropriately selected pieces. I thoroughly recommend him.

I met Edward when we were studying our Master's degrees at the Royal Academy of Music in London. We have since collaborated in songwriting and composition. His knowledge in piano playing, jazz harmony, lyric and songwriting is vastly beyond mine (I'm a cellist) and he always is happy to explain patiently and clearly. He is a joy to learn from and extremely proficient and professional in all that he does. He is a kind teacher and will tailor his teaching method to what each student needs - I highly recommend him!

For five years now I have had the pleasure of taking weekly lessons with Ed Wren. Ed is a very skillful teacher who listens attentively and offers constructive feedback which helped and still helps me become more confident. What truly sets him apart is his wide range of interests and his level of knowledge. I highly recommend his lessons to anyone seeking a thoughtful, knowledgeable, and inspiring teacher.

Ed is not only a lifelong pianist, but an excellent communicator. His patience, diligence and mastery of the piano make him a really outstanding teacher!

I am fortunate to have known Ed for many years, to have received music tuition from him, and collaborated on many projects. You really can't find a friendlier, more person-centred and musically-gifted teacher out there!
