About Yuanshuai

Yuanshuai Cui followed an unusual musical path. Awarded the third prize of the professional group of the piano competition in Shandong in 2009 while she was still a high school student, she began her formal studies of piano in the United States at the age of 18, first at Allegheny College (Meadville, Pennsylvania) under the aegis of Marcella Branagan, and then at the prestigious Jacobs School of Music of Indiana University (Bloomington Indiana), where she studied with Karen Shaw and received a master's degree in piano performance. At the Jacobs School of Music she was an associate teacher, giving private and group lessons at the university. In 2018, she was accepted into the International Certificate for Piano Artists (ICPA) program directed by Nelson Delle-Vigne Fabbri, taking master-classes while performing in Belgium, Russia, Poland and Lithuania. She is currently a scholarship recepient of the ICPA. In masterclasses and private coachings, she has worked with renowned pianists such as Alec Chien, John O'Connor, Douglas Humpherys, Anne Maria Bottazzi, Lev Natochenny, Eugen Indjic, Boaz Sharon, Josep Colom, Mikhail Karpov , and Jerome Lowenthal. She was recently invited to give concerts on Chopin's music in Jinan and Beijing and to give a lecture-recital at the Normal School of Music at Shandong University. Parallel to her pianistic activities, she is also pursuing a doctorate in musicology at the Sorbonne and welcomes students of all ages and all levels in her private studio in Paris and online.

Welcome to Yuanshuai's Piano Studio!
I give individual piano lessons to students of all ages and all levels, in French, English, & 中文, in person and via webcam.

Since I started teaching 5 years ago, my mission has been to share the joy of discovering music and to help each student find their unique voice on the piano by playing the music that speaks to them.

More specificly:
1. I prepare lessons to bring out the individuality and expressiveness of each student. You will be playing on the piano from the first lesson!
2. I respect the musical pleasures and desires of my students.
"I want to be able to play the song I like."
"I want to be able to play with more passion."
"I have small hands but I would like to play the big pieces."
I always listen to the needs and wishes of my students in lessons, and together we choose the repertoire that help you develop.

Methodology - Problem-Solving
There is a lot to say about the methodology - there are lots of books and methods on this subject, but often the discussion drifts away from real-life practice. So it is necessary to refocus on what is important: there is ultimately only one thing that matters in order to make progress - the ability to solve problems, technical or musical.

In each lesson, I draw inspiration from past cases - sometimes from my teachers, but also from the challenges my students encountered! - to cultivate in each student a keen eye to detect problems and the intuition to find the best solutions.

This idea goes back to my first teacher in the United States. While learning a difficult passage had been a matter of repetition and will power, she taught me to repeat with varied rhythms and to find groupings conforming to my hands; while learning a piece by heart had always scared me, she taught me that one could deliberately train musical memory by building the mental image, analyzing harmony, etc. In four years, she transformed me from an enthusiastic teenager into a pianist capable of thinking and working independently.

---- Thus this has become my goal: unlike the traditional method with a fixed recipe, the students in my lessons will learn to work more effectively at home, analyze and solve problems in a creative way, and eventually become musicians capable of learning and playing independently.

Details

A lesson lasts between 45min and 1h15 at the teacher's studio or via webcam.
(In very special cases, possibility having lesson at the student's home.)

In my experience, it is essential to have continuous training for keeping up the motivation and progress of the student. Interruptions and lessons at irregular intervals are the main obstacles for amateurs and professionals alike. So instead of individual lessons, I offer the following formulas:

Formula 1: Discovery
3 weeks: 40 x 3 = 120

Formula 2. Regular
3 months (12 weeks): 40 x (12 - 1) = 440 (1 lesson offered)

For young children who are starting the piano, I suggest dividing one regular-lengthed lesson into two 30-minute sessions per week (together for the same price as one regular lesson). Children never have more than 2 or 3 days between 2 lessons, and the practice at home becomes more manageable. Regular lessons begin as soon as the teacher judges that the student can work effectively independently at home.
