About Michael
I’ve built my career as a musician through a combination of rigorous training, ongoing professional work, and the influence of a small number of exceptional teachers. When I reflect on my own development, it’s those individuals — the ones who combined deep musical understanding with genuine inspiration — who made the lasting difference.
That balance continues to shape my work today. Alongside my teaching, I maintain an active career as a conductor and collaborator, working across a range of ensembles and projects. This ongoing professional practice feeds directly into my teaching, allowing me to offer not only technical guidance, but insight into the realities of musical life, performance, and collaboration.
I believe that music is both intellectual and instinctive — something to be understood, but also something to be felt. The most meaningful progress happens when both aspects are engaged. My aim is to help students develop a strong, secure musical foundation while also deepening their curiosity, confidence, and personal connection to the music they study.
If you’re looking to develop your musicianship in a way that is both structured and creatively engaging, I’d be very happy to hear from you.

Lessons are tailored, focused, and responsive to the individual. Our initial sessions will establish your goals, current level, and areas for development, allowing us to shape a clear and purposeful direction for your work.
I teach composition, theory, and conducting, and sessions are adapted depending on your focus:
Music Theory & Musicianship — developing a secure technical foundation, whether working towards exams (including ABRSM) or building broader understanding.
Composition — supporting you in refining your musical language and giving you the tools to express your own creative ideas with clarity and confidence.
Conducting — going beyond gesture to explore interpretation, score-reading, and rehearsal technique, helping you develop a deeper understanding of the music and your role within it.
My teaching is informed by over 20 years’ experience working with students aged 13 through to adult, across a range of levels from GCSE/A-Level through to university/conservatoire admission, undergraduate, and beyond. Alongside private teaching, I am regularly engaged in professional and educational projects, including leading orchestral workshops and working with established ensembles. This allows me to connect technical study with real musical practice.
Lessons are typically one hour, and can be adapted to suit your specific aims — whether you are working towards exams, preparing for further study, or developing your skills more broadly.

Perfect! A vastly knowledgeable and experienced musician, Michael is uncommonly attentive and tailors every aspect of every lesson to the requirements and projected outcomes of the individual student. A sincerely exceptional tutor.
Perfect! Michael is an excellent teacher: passionate about music and about catering lessons completely to student interest, level, and pace. He has been tremendously helpful in structuring my daughter’s approach to music composition and she says that their lessons are discursive and Socratic. There’s never a dull moment between analysing Bach Chorales or Schubert Lieder!
Perfect! Michael is an excellent tutor who posesses a wealth of knowledge and expertise that is useful for beginner and professional alike. His friendliness and support make even the most challenging of tasks seem approachable and understandable. For those who are interested in pushing their abilities he is always ready with a range of approaches to encourage and support you. On top of all that he is extremely easy to chat to.
I thoroughly enjoy my lessons with him and I'm sure you will too.Perfect! K
Perfect! I had my first lesson with Michael today and was really impressed. I came to him for guidance with my own songs from a compositional perspective, as well as to build a solid foundation in music theory. He explained things clearly, struck a great balance between theory and practical application, and created a relaxed but focused atmosphere. I came away with fresh insights into my writing and a clearer path forward with theory. Looking forward to continuing!
Perfect! Explained everything very well!
Perfect! My daughter has told me that Michael is very friendly, encouraging and knowledgeable. She feels hopeful that with Michael's help she will achieve her music theory ambitions ( including exams) and improve her musicality in general.
Perfect! Michael very quickly identifies where my strengths and weaknesses are and to what degree, conveys information very clearly and so that it is memorable and easy to comprehend and challenges me at an achievable level.
Perfect! Very methodical and practical approach, Michael is helping me develop as a well-rounded musician.
Perfect! Michael helped my son with GCSE composition. He is an amazing tutor and very dedicated to seeing students succeed. He personalises his guidance in order to give them the right advice for their ability level whilst allowing them to use their own initiative. Would certainly recommend him - well worth it.
Perfect! Good, clear explanation and illustration of a new technique, thank you.

I have worked with Michael in the orchestra setting where he conducts a group of aspiring musicians through wonderful repertoire in a short amount of time before the concert. Michael is an incredible instructor - he is knowledgeable about the music and goes beyond just conducting the group by incorporating the piece’s theory and history to encourage and inspire the musician’s playing. Michael’s demeanour in this process is very open, friendly, patient, flexible and organised. When playing in the orchestra, I can clearly see Michael’s passion for music and teaching and it’s very refreshing! I highly recommend Michael as a teacher!
Michael is a talented, professional, and experienced teacher and musician who is an absolute pleasure to learn from and work with. His depth of knowledge and enthusiastic passion for music is reflected in his lessons and rehearsals making them fun, dynamic, and inspiring. As well as being encouraging, friendly, and attentive, Michael’s technical methodology is outstanding and easy to understand. Personally speaking, he has been able to unlock potential and musicianship I didn’t know I had and I always look forward to my lessons with him!
I’ve played under Michael in orchestral concerts and as well as being an exciting conductor to work with, I found him a fantastic communicator and leader. I look forward to working with him in the future.
I have been working with Michael for about 7 years now within London Firebird Orchestra’s projects, and I cannot recommend him enough! He works efficiently, possesses a complex music knowledge, and his team-work spirit is absolutely remarkable! And, of course, his results reflect these qualities entirely, judging from the constant positive feedback we have achieved as a team over the years. Moreover, he has a unique way of sharing his expertise in a friendly manner through anecdotes, which makes the whole learning process more enjoyable on the one hand, and much more likely to be remembered by those who learn from him on the other hand.
I am very grateful for having had the chance to continue working with Michael, and I hope many more aspiring musicians will benefit from his competence!I have known and worked with Michael for almost a decade now. He is a great musician with tremendous experience and heart. He is always conscientious in his critiques, and though I have only worked with him as a colleague, I’m sure that he would brillant for a student needing help for their music theory and musicianship.
Hugely recommended.View more recommendations
