As a composer and theorist with decades of experience teaching students in private lessons and classrooms, I can tailor lessons to your needs.

Students can get individual feedback on counterpoint and voice-leading, compositional techniques, theory terms. I want students to get what they want out of lessons, so I make sure to tailor individual student needs into my lesson plans.

I make sure to also use my expertise to fill in knowledge gaps when students need them, and try to begin lessons with direct feedback on a student's work.

  • When did you first develop a passion for music and your favorite instrument?

I grew up in a musical household - both of my parents were music teachers in public school. I sang in church, and began playing trombone. I played trombone for a long time, and still love playing when I have the chance.
  • Is there a particular type of music or artist that you listen to on a loop without it driving you crazy?

I think after all my years being in rehearsals and practice rooms nothing drives me that crazy! But, I do listen to a lot of acoustic americana music on repeat when I'm doing something I don't need my ears actively for.
  • Explain to us the most difficult or riveting course you could personally give to a student of music.

I'd love to teach a student how to write their own plug-in for a DAW. It's something I've done, and my dissertation research was writing software for musical tasks.
  • What do you think is the most complicated instrument to master and why?

For me it was piano. I never quite got as good as I could, even when I practiced a lot. I think about it as difficult for me because I mostly play trombone and guitar - piano just seems super weird to my brain!
  • What are your keys to success?

I think consistency and patience are the biggest keys to success. Small steps every day really add up over time.
  • Name three musicians you dream of meeting in your favourite bar in the early hours of the morning. Explain why.

Bach, as he had such an interesting life. I'd love to meet Lyle Lovett - really great musicianship. And I think, for a really curious one, Josquin des Prez, as I've used a lot of his techniques over my lifetime as a composer.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to music or your days at music school.

My first jury I felt unprepared for and just didn't feel comfortable. I probably played fine, but the teachers encouraged me to consider how hard I was working. The next student I turned pages for. Although they weren't as technically gifted and musical, they clearly were prepared and put in extra time when possible. The faculty made it clear that their preparation set them apart, and I learned a valuable lesson about knowing that people "know" how much work you're putting in.
  • What are the little touches that make you a Superprof in music?

I am a broadly versatile musician, able to cross between pop and classical, historical music and electronic music and draw connections for students. As a result, students who have distant, but deep, musical interests may find that I can help them connect their interests to develop a personal voice.
