About Simon

Graduating LAMDA in 2004, I have been lucky enough to work consistently in the industry for 20 years. Performing in over 40 stage productions, beginning with smaller parts and graduating to playing lead roles at the RSC, Shakespeare's Globe and in the West End, I have always been keen to learn as much as possible from those around me. Working in theatre has given me moments I will never forget, and I am passionate about helping other actors experience this. Screenwise, I cut my teeth in the 2014 movie Everest, with Jake Gyllenhaal and Josh Brolin. Since then I have played many roles including, George Washington in Outlander, Baruch in His Dark Materials, and several series as Ronnie Box in Endeavour. I currently have two projects coming out later this year - Delia on ITV and Toxic Town on Netflix. I believe that everybody is different, and every actor has their own story to tell and their own unique way of telling it. By providing fellow actors with the knowledge I have acquired and the tools with which to use it, I believe I can help them get to wherever they want to go.

About the lesson

Whether it is preparing for an audition, providing a scene partner for self-tapes, or applying to drama schools, I can help. Preparing for an audition these days can be tricky, as there is often very little time and even less detail (especially in TV) about what you are auditioning for. I can help you quickly break down the script, find the beats, and create a compelling narrative. While also rehearsing the scene with you, enabling you to feel strong and confident in your choices. As most first auditions (even theatre) are self-tapes, I can be there to prepare the script with you before filming the scenes: providing not only direction but also a fully committed performance behind the camera to allow you to give your best work in front of it. When it comes to preparing a young actor to audition for drama schools, I have a wealth of experience to help them succeed. Drama schools are a reflection of the industry as a whole, and as such, they are looking for authenticity. My approach is to listen to the student and help them present themselves as the actor they want to be, whilst also providing them with the technical skills they need to achieve this. Such skills will include: Voice work - breathing, projection, articulation. Text work - including understanding iambic pentameter for Shakespeare, but also beats, units and actioning the text for modern plays. Character work - including the character's physicality and intentions. Self-Tape technique - Self-taping is when the actor films themselves auditioning, without the director/casting director in the room. It has become increasingly common in the industry and is now often used as a first audition by drama schools. It can be confusing - especially when taping for theatre - so I will help demystify the process. Sourcing audition texts - I can help find the students suitable monologues that highlight their talent and versatility best.

He was warm, approachable, and extremely knowledgeable about the industry and audition process (including self-tapes).
