About Ella May

I am currently completing a PhD in Shakespeare at the Shakespeare Institute (University of Birmingham), where my research focuses on performance and interpretation. I also hold a Master’s Degree in Shakespeare Studies. Alongside my academic work, I own and run a Speech and Drama school in Birmingham, where I have been teaching students aged 5 to 19, and adult learners, for over ten years. My students prepare for, and consistently achieve, excellent results in LAMDA examinations, including 'Speaking in Public', 'Speaking Verse and Prose', 'Acting', 'Shakespeare in Performance' and 'Miming'. This blend of scholarly expertise and practical performance training allows me to approach Shakespeare and literature from both academic and creative perspectives. I believe that language and performance should be experienced, not just studied, and that literature comes to life through voice, imagination, and empathy. I’m a warm, approachable, and encouraging teacher who believes that learning should be both challenging and enjoyable. I take pride in creating lessons that make students feel supported and inspired, while building their confidence step by step.

About the lesson

I help students perform, communicate, and build confidence through engaging, tailored lessons that prepare them for a wide range of LAMDA examinations. With over a decade of experience guiding students aged 5–19 (and adults too!) through LAMDA grades in 'Speaking Verse and Prose', 'Speaking in Public', 'Shakespeare for Performance', 'Miming', and the LAMDA PCertLam, I focus on developing clarity, creativity, and confidence in every learner. My approach combines professional speech and drama training with insights from my PhD research in Shakespeare, helping students not only perform well but truly understand the material they are performing. Whether you’re preparing for a LAMDA exam, working on a school drama assessment, refining an audition piece for drama school, or hoping to enhance your presentation and public speaking skills, each lesson is designed to bring out your individual strengths and personality. Typical lessons include: - Preparing and polishing monologues and duologues for LAMDA Performance examinations ('Shakespeare in Performance', 'Acting' and 'Miming'), - Developing and refining speeches and recitations for LAMDA Communication examinations ('Speaking Verse and Prose' and 'Speaking in Public'), - Audition preparation for drama school entry, - Mastering voice, diction, and performance confidence, - Exploring character, motivation, and emotion through text and movement, - Building strong public speaking and presentation skills, - Understanding and performing Shakespeare’s language and verse with clarity and confidence, I create a positive, encouraging environment where students grow in both skill and self-belief. Whether the goal is to achieve top LAMDA grades, gain performance experience, understand Shakespeare in greater depth, or simply express themselves more confidently, I’m passionate about helping each student reach their full potential.
