The Keyboard, King of Instruments

The Keyboard is the king of instruments, and all major composers have used this instrument. This is because its layout is very friendly and quite visual. People who are starting to learn music will find it useful and quite pleasant how easy and logical it is to translate what is on the page to the instrument itself.

For example, music is composed of 12 notes. Seven of these notes are what we call natural notes. These are C, D, E, F, G, A, and B. When you sing them, you might recognise them even more so because we sing: Do, Re, Mi, Fa, Sol, La, Ti, and Do again. But we’ve just said that music is composed of 12 notes. So the other five are what we call accidentals, and these are the sharps (#) and flats (b) of music. C#, D#, F#, G#, and A#.

So why is the keyboard the best instrument to learn music notation and theory? Because the white keys in the Keyboard are the 7 natural notes, and the black keys are the accidentals. This instrument’s layout is so entangled with music theory that it makes it obvious for students to see exactly which note they are applying at all times.

This is not the case for other instruments like the bass, the guitar, the flute, or the violin. In fact, there’s no other instrument that is as clear as the Keyboard when it comes to being aware of what you are playing.

Your teacher won’t have much of a problem showing you the theory that explains how music works. This is great for students as well because it opens the possibility for composition and improvisation. Your teacher can spend some lessons with just notation or go deeper into intervals, tonality, and harmony.

Teaching music theory with a Keyboard is a joy, and teachers know how simple it is to explain this to students eager to learn more about how to write songs and pieces in any style.
