About Jennifer

I am the clarinettist for the Nevis Ensemble in Glasgow and also passionate about musical education. My previous role was Clarinet Teaching Artist for In Harmony Opera North, and I have taught for Priory Farm Music Camp and Windstruments Summer Schools. Whilst at the University of Cincinnati I was educated in teaching fundamental clarinet technique, and this is my specialism. I am delighted to work with both children and adult learners.

About the lesson

An enthusiastic teacher and performer, I have completed a Master of Music degree at RWCMD and Bachelor of Music at University of Birmingham during which time I was also educated abroad at University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, U.S.A. My teaching philosophy involves equal focus on musical and technical elements of clarinet playing in lessons. I believe that it is important to build good instrumental technique from the beginning of the learning process in order to enable the student to make a beautiful sound, as this will enable them to get the most pleasure out of their music making. Most importantly, though, music-making should be fun at any level, and I view it as my job to inspire the student and make the learning process enjoyable! I have worked for the Opera North In Harmony programme, and am now a musician for the Nevis Ensemble.

Perfect! Jennifer is knowledgeable, friendly, and clearly passionate about teaching music. I have been a student for the past half year, and my skills have grown from being a total saxophone novice to feeling quite comfortable in my musical abilities. This includes both playing the instrument and understanding music theory.

Learning with Jennifer has been a wholesome experience, and I can wholeheartedly recommend her as a music tutor for beginners and advanced learners alike :)

Jennifer is an expert teacher with a personalised approach to nurturing both musical aptitude and creativity. Whether working with music theory or the ways to play and recognise music, – not limited to that of the clarinet and saxophone, – Jennifer will have a student of any level grow both confidence and skill, by masterfully teaching how to achieve the best of sound. I highly recommend Jennifer as a music tutor: with her strong knowledge and support, I have become able to play the saxophone and managed to grasp a broad range of musical concepts, from notation to musical literacy, even composition.

Having not picked up my clarinet for over 40 years I was a little nervous in finding a new Tutor. Jennifer put me at ease immediately and having assessed my level I soon began to improve and looked forward immensely to my lessons. We combined theory and practical revision and I even performed a due with her at a local recital. Jennifer is an excellent tutor and plays the clarinet herself wonderfully. Mark Holland
