About Emily
I am a Masters student at the University of Pretoria, with a BSc Geography and BSocSci Hons Geography and Environmental Science (cum laude) under my belt. I have been an academic tutor at the university for over two years, and have developed course material and lessons for undergraduate students in the following subjects: Anthropology, Environmental Science, Urban Geography and Environmental Geography. Furthermore, my work with the multinational, educational NGO Born Global has equipped me with the tools to turn ideas into actionable strategies for engaging students in critical issues such as biodiversity loss and climate change.
I am a passionate student and teacher, and view all education as a collaborative process. I have a proven track record of presenting academic material to large groups of students in an engaging and accessible manner. Having worked through the stages of an undergraduate degree, I know what it takes to thrive in university, and how to study for understanding rather than memorisation. I believe that education is an ongoing effort, with opportunities for growth existing both inside and outside of the university space.

Aimed at undergraduate students in the social sciences and humanities, my lessons are geared toward empowering the student to develop skills to tackle their courseload with confidence. I am a native English speaker, and conduct classes as such.
Lessons will begin with looking at the student's current standing in a certain subject. Once their proficiencies and limitations have been identified, we will work together to bridge the gap between understanding and confusion. I take a macro-level approach, and will work on ensuring that a student understands the fundamental tenets of a subject before working on specifics. These lessons are discursive and conversational, and I encourage students to critically reflect on their existing knowledge as a way to grapple with new, scaffolded concepts. This will culminate with a short writing exercise to help the student synthesise their ideas and cement what has been discussed.
