About Jay

Hi there, my name is Jay Zhang, and I am currently a medical / nursing student at the University of Auckland. I have been tutoring for 3-4 years as a peer tutor and as a student tutor both in high school and surrounding primary schools, allowing me to gain experience in tutoring across all ages and ethnicities.

I love not only achieving success myself, but also allowing others to do so as well.

I have received NCEA scholarships in Geography (2023), History (2024), Classical studies (2024), English (2024), and a NCEA outstanding scholarship in Geography (2024).

I am the winner of the University of Auckland international school leavers scholarship, Westlake Boys young international scholarship as a year 12, offered the university of Otago Vice-Chancellor's scholarship, and Otago's International global scholarships in 2025.

NCEA excellence endorsed at levels 1, 2 and 3, with final year ATAR conversion being 99.25 (top 0.75% of all Australian and New Zealand transfer students).

About the lesson

- Fun, interactive yet informative style of teaching. Instead of rote learning, the tutee would be encouraged to find and discover information and evidence that fascinate them, ultimately allowing passion in their writing, subsequently enhancing the quality of their response

- lessons are typically around 60 min but can be flexible depending on the need of the student.

- 2 years of experience as a peer tutor at Westlake Boys

- NCEA scholarship geography recipient in 2023 (top 3% of all Geography students in NZ) - NCEA outstanding Geography scholarship recipient in 2024 (top 0.3% of all students in NZ, also top 13 students in NZ for geography)

- happy to tutor high school students starting from basic year 9 social science to NCEA scholarship geography

I've been lucky to know Jay not just as a friend but as someone I’ve often turned to for support and advice. He’s one of the most thoughtful and emotionally mature people I know. He listens carefully, treats every concern like it's his own, and offers genuine, helpful insights. That same care and presence is exactly what I believe he will bring to tutoring.

Jay is calm, patient, and clear in the way he explains things. He makes difficult concepts easier to understand and always takes the time to ensure you feel confident. More than just helping with tough topics, he builds a supportive connection and genuinely tries to instill self-belief in his students—just as he’s done for me.

He’s not only intelligent and dependable but also kind and deeply committed. Any student would be lucky to have him—not just as a tutor, but as a mentor. I recommend him with full confidence.
