About Dr Scott
TEACHING/TUTORING PHILOSOPHY
I am a passionate, engaging educator with over three decades of expertise in university/college teaching, research and environmental consulting who loves teaching and learning. My pedagogical approach originates from select exceptional teachers and my own style of working with students. Teaching demands a cogent grasp of course material, as well as the "art" of explaining course content enthusiastically and clearly. I serve students and encourage receptivity to inquiry-driven, proactive learning by providing clear instruction and support.
Teaching and research provide a complementary synergism for illustrating concepts in physical geography, while exposing students to the challenges and successes of research. When we do not incorporate the “human side” of science in the stories we tell our students, such as how we became excited about physical geography, why we love academia, the disappointments surmounted and the exhilaration of discovery, we deny our students the opportunity to view themselves as connected with their education and course material. I have presented at 22 international academic conferences and one mining industry trade show, and have been awarded 34 research grants and academic scholarships totaling over $560,000 (1994-2018).
My teaching style involves:
- A positive, personalized learning environment;
- Proactive thinking and participation to engage students, while being sensitive to the diverse ways in which students learn (metacognition);
- Explaining course material, sharing practical examples, illustrative visuals and stories, while inviting student questions;
- Discussions and problem solving scenarios to emphasize integrative higher learning; and,
- Contemporary research to inspire students.

Recommendations
Recommendations come from relatives, friends and acquaintances of the teacher
I am a high school student and would definitely recommend Dr. Scotty for Biology tutoring. He is incredibly knowledgeable and has a talent for explaining concepts in a clear and understandable way, making even complex ideas easier to remember. Scotty had a calm, supportive way of engaging with me that helped build my confidence and made biology feel less overwhelming. He took the time to address any difficulties I was having and helped me have a successful biology semester.
I had the pleasure of having Dr. Scott as an instructor for a fourth-year biology course. He is, by far, the most kind, caring, and informative instructor I have ever had. Not only does he take the time to emphasise the importance of what he is teaching, but he does it in a style that makes it relevant and relatable. Moreover, he was just a fun and genuinely loving person. I truly wish more of my instructors were like him! You absolutely will not go wrong if you choose him as a tutor.
I was taught by Dr. Scott for 1.5 years. I would highly recommend him as a teacher. He was always well prepared, knew the material well and was always willing to answer my questions.
Dr. Scott is a teacher who always does his best to provide quality teaching. When I'm in his class, he always ensures that everyone is on the same page and promotes questions and discussions to make sure that all students are understand the material. Dr. Scott is very kind and can maintain a safe learning environment where no one is left out or harmed. He has an easy-going personality and truly desires the best for everyone he teaches. he never shames or puts people down and is ready to meet you wherever you are to walk alongside you to success..
I fully recommend Dr. Scott as both a teacher and tutor. He is very knowledgeable and thorough in his teaching. What I appreciate most is his attention to detail and his intentional approach to meeting one's needs. Dr. Scott genuinely cares about his students and their success, and that's what matters most.
I am honored to recommend Dr. Scott as a mentor and teacher. He has been a guiding influence in my life—not only academically, but also personally and spiritually. When I came to Canada and had to complete courses in Biology and Communication, I was fortunate to have Dr. Scott’s support. His guidance and dedication helped me excel in both courses with excellent grades.
Dr. Scott’s passion for science is evident in the way he integrates detailed thinking with practical solutions. What sets him apart is his commitment to ensuring that every principle is fully understood by his students. He finds genuine joy in seeing others grasp concepts that once seemed difficult.
I wholeheartedly recommend Dr. Scott to the Superprof community. His deep knowledge, passion for teaching, and sincere investment in his students’ success make him an outstanding mentor and educator.View more recommendations
