About Sam
As an independent tutor and instructor at Boston University, I taught 156 students. 85% of them improved their class averages; of that 85%, 56% improved by a whole letter grade or more. Do you need help figuring out how many of my students jumped up a whole letter grade? I'm the solution you're looking for.

I teach by application and problem solving. The best way to understand a mathematical abstraction is to apply it, and I teach by walking students through problems less and less until they can solve independently and explain it back. You don't teach English by providing words without definitions-- why teach math by providing formulas without understanding?
A typical lesson plan involves a pre-lesson problem set or a review of exams/HW to identify weak spots in a student's needed mathematical skills, observing how the student approaches and sets up a problem to solve, and proceeding from there. A lesson is complete and successful when a student can 'teach the subject back' to me-- explain it in such a way that demonstrates full understanding.
As a mathematics tutor, I am set apart by the fact that I struggled with math before college. Despite that, with the help of a tutor and my own intuition, I went on to receive several funded PhD offers in mathematics. Math is scary until someone who knows that helps. Not all math teachers know it-- I do.
I teach at the high school level, specializing in intuitive approaches to HS subjects, and at the underclassman level, specializing in mathematics for data/computer science.
