About Evan

Hello, there! My name is Evan. I’m currently studying at the University of Auckland, pursuing a double major in Accounting and Finance for my Bachelor’s degree. I’m proud to be an alumnus of Auckland Grammar School, where I followed the Cambridge Pathway. During my time at AGS, I served as the leader of the Headmaster's International Committee for 2 years, to organize events and support international students from worldwide.

Over the past few years, I’ve been tutoring students 1-to-1 in Accounting and Mathematics, focusing on those enrolled in the Cambridge Pathway and NCEA Pathway. My approach has consistently helped students improve their grades significantly. One of my student from AGS became the top Statistics student in his school after our sessions together.

I’m also passionate about music and was privileged to be the Section Leader in the school's Premier Concert Band and Symphony Orchestra. If you’re into music, I’m sure we’ll have a lot in common to talk about!

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

For me, math is more than just a subject-it's a tool for developing critical thinking and problem-solving skills. I began private tutoring in high school, assisting classmates who found math challenging. My goal is to help students make meaningful progress and achieve excellent results through my guidance.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I teach mathematics, focusing on algebra, calculus and statistics. I love teaching algebra because it forms the foundation for so many advanced concepts. I would like my students to have a solid base of knowledge so it will be helpful in their future. Topics like statistics can be challenging to teach as it involves many mathematical concepts. The formulas are also arithmetically complex, making them difficult to apply without errors. Students who are not very good at maths may struggle.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

Yes, my high school math teacher, Mr. Martin, was a huge inspiration for me. His class is always filled with passion and interest. He had his own way of making math come alive, often linking abstract concepts to real-life applications. His belief in my abilities motivated me to overcome many challenges and he knew exactly what students were looking for.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

A good tutor needs patience, adaptability, and creativity. Each student has a unique way of learning, so it's important to tailor explanations to their needs. A good tutor also needs to foster a positive environment where students feel safe to make any mistakes and learn from them.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

One of my first tutoring experiences was in high school, helping a student with algebra and calculus. She had a big trouble understanding how to solve linear equations, so I showed them a step-by-step method and explained the reasoning behind each step. After a few sessions, she felt more confident and was able to complete her homework more independently. It was a simple but rewarding experience that reinforced my interest in tutoring and helping others.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still face in your subject?

One challenge I faced with statistics was initially grasping the abstract nature of concepts like probability distributions and hypothesis testing. These topics felt disconnected from real-life applications at first, making them harder to internalise. However, after I worked through more practical examples and exercises, like analyzing data trends or making predictions, they started to make sense. Now, I help students overcome the same challenges by emphasising relatable examples and hands-on practice.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

I have a strong passion for music and I have played Percussion for almost 12 years and I really enjoyed it. I also play badminton and billiards in my free time.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions)?

I strive to create a supportive and engaging learning environment where students not only improve their math skills but also develop confidence and a growth mindset. My approach is student-centered, focusing on their needs and learning styles to make math easy. It is hard for students to enjoy maths, but at least I will try to make them successful.
