About Joel

Joel is a highly qualified professional when it comes to teaching performance skills. Graduating from Charles Sturt University with a Bachelor of Theatre/Media in 2017. Joel has extended his teaching skills with a Master of Teaching - Secondary (Drama & Media) in 2019. Also a graduate of the Diploma of Screen Performance at the critically acclaimed Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA) in 2020. Having experience teaching talented and gifted primary students as a Drama Facilitator at Edith Cowan University's PEAC Program for two years.

He also has previous experience teaching Drama and Media at three Perth Secondary Schools as well as being an Assistant at WAAPA Holiday Workshops. And recent experience teaching at FilmBites Screen Academy in Perth.

Joel has had roles in plays and musicals since he was 15 years old and has directed devised work at university level. Please feel free to get in contact to get started on your personalised lessons as soon as possible!

\\ IMPORTANT NOTES // TRAVEL: $10 travel fee is added if an in-person lesson is based over 15km from tutor's residence.

CANCELLATION: 24hr Cancellation Policy. Student must let Tutor know at least 24hrs before commencement of the lesson if unable to attend for any reason.

About the lesson

My teaching philosophy is that every student has the right to learn and feel like they belong. I do my best to prepare each lesson adequately to ensure responsible and consistent learning is achieved in my classes. I also value inclusivity and representation from diverse backgrounds (POC & LGBQTI+). Performing and becoming a character is a cathartic, confidence-building experience that I recommend everyone should try! Don't worry if you haven't done any acting before. I will help guide you through the techniques I have learned from my teachers, and methods I have used over the years.

I am available to teach the following content online, your home, or my studio space within the Perth Metropolitan region; - Script analysis. - Acting for Screen. - Acting for Theatre. - Presenting to camera. - Blocking - Stage directions with actors. - Voice work - Preparing the voice for text. - Anne Bogart's Viewpoints System (Movement). - ATAR Drama Practical tutoring. - WAAPA/NIDA/VCA/QUT Monologue Audition preparation. - Audition 'Self-tape' set up and reading. - A home Self-tape Studio based in Shenton Park. (I can even be your scene partner if you like!). Lessons usually run for an hour and consist of an introduction, warm-up, main skill/workshop, then concluding with a one-on-one discussion.
