About Irene

As a former LSE lecturer with degrees from Oxford, UCL and LSE, I support students through competitive university applications and university-level essay writing.

University admissions: I support applicants to leading universities, including Oxford, Cambridge, LSE, UCL, King’s, Durham, Warwick, Edinburgh and St Andrews. That covers choosing courses, UCAS applications, personal statements, admissions tests and interviews. I also help with postgraduate applications, including statements of purpose and research proposals for master’s and PhD programmes.

Undergraduate essay support and tutoring: I work with university students in the social sciences and humanities who want someone to think alongside. I can help youu with difficult readings, sharpen arguments before writing, and go through honest, detailed feedback on essays and dissertations. I’m most at home in law, politics, political theory, political economy and international relations, and happy to help across related subjects.

I studied Law at Oxford, then did my MA at UCL and my LLM and PhD at LSE, where I taught undergraduates. I’ve studied at three of the UK’s most selective universities and marked a great deal of student writing, so I know what admissions tutors and examiners look for. I also know how to help students get there in their own voice.

Alongside academia, I have worked in government, think tanks and human rights organisations. This helps me connect academic ideas to real-world questions, and that matters in interviews and personal statements as much as in university essays.

Part of my own education was in French and Chinese, and I work with both UK and international students. I understand the particular challenge of writing at a high level in a second language.

Education: BA Law, University of Oxford · MA Legal and Political Theory, UCL · LLM International Law, LSE · PhD in Law, LSE

Every student is different, so I shape each session around where you are and what you need, whether that’s a first conversation about which universities to apply to or detailed feedback on a final-year dissertation.

For applicants

Personal statements: working out what to say, then line-by-line feedback on drafts. I’m familiar with the new question-based UCAS format, and I’ll help you write one statement that works for all your choices.
Interviews: practice interviews, discussion of unseen material, and reading suggestions to build your thinking well before the day.
Postgraduate applications: statements of purpose and research proposals.

For undergraduates

Discussion sessions: working through readings, lectures and difficult ideas and testing your arguments before you write.
Essay and dissertation feedback: argument, structure, use of sources and clarity of writing. I often encourage students to look at ideas historically, because institutions and theories that seem fixed in the abstract become much clearer once you see how they developed.

How it works

You can book live sessions, written feedback, or a mix of both. For written feedback, send me your work and I’ll return detailed comments within a week (often within three days). Many students find it works best to get written comments first, then meet to talk them through.

My feedback is honest and specific. I’ll tell you what’s working, what isn’t and why. I don’t write applications or essays for students. The aim is for your work to be clearly yours and as strong as it can be.

Sessions are online or in person in London. Your first 30 minutes are free, so we can talk through what you’re working on and how I can help.

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

My interest in politics and law led me to study Law at Oxford, work in human rights organisations and later complete a PhD in banking regulation. Tutoring has been a lovely way to bring these experiences together. I enjoy helping students understand challenging ideas and become more confident in expressing their own views.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I teach politics and also support students with essay writing, admissions and university-level work. There isn’t a topic I particularly dislike, but I find facts much more interesting when we explore why they matter, rather than simply memorising them!
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

The teachers I admire most are those who take students’ ideas seriously and make it feel comfortable to ask questions. I think a good teacher can be both encouraging and challenging: someone who helps you think more deeply without making you feel embarrassed about what you don’t yet know. That’s the approach I aim to bring to my lessons.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

Patience, warmth and the ability to explain things clearly. It’s also important to listen, students have different strengths, interests and ways of learning. A good tutor should be able to adapt, give useful feedback and help students feel that progress is within their reach.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

One thing my own journey has taught me is that your interests can take you in unexpected directions. Studying law eventually led me into human rights work, banking regulation and now training in psychotherapy for young people. These might seem quite different, but they all involve questions about people and the institutions that shape their lives. I like to remind students that they don’t need to have their whole future worked out to follow something they find interesting.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or are still facing in your subject?

A challenge I recognise from my own studies is turning a complicated idea into a clear argument. You can understand something but still find it difficult to explain on paper! That’s why I spend time helping students break ideas down, organise their thoughts and build an argument step by step.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

I’m particularly interested in understanding people, both through politics and through my current training in psychology. In teaching, I love the moment when something clicks for a student, especially when they begin making connections or developing an argument of their own.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P)?

I bring a broad academic background, a friendly approach and a real interest in what each student has to say. I want lessons to feel like a space where you can ask questions freely, try out ideas and build confidence. And I’m always happy to explain something another way if it hasn’t clicked the first time!
