About Senlin (Tom)
I started teaching myself English as the age of fourteen using a transistor radio and an English textbook and grammar book, and became fluent in English before I was admitted into a Chinese university as an English major at the age of sixteen. Upon completing my undergraduate study, I became a "baby teacher" at a Chinese university in the early 1980s while working on my M.A. in the English Language and Literature. With more than twenty years of teaching and academic research, I got promoted as an Assistant Prof. before I came to do my PhD in Education Studies at Western University, London, Canada. After my PhD study, I worked as an English Communications Professor Fanshawe College (part-time ) while operating a small business that provides academic and non-academic support to international students at local level. Then I gave up my teaching position for family reunion in Singapore. Now I am back in Canada, to continue with my small business while teaching part-time again.

I am a Chinese Canadian, who has proven record of success in learning and teaching English as a Second Language in China and Canada respectively. Due to my linguistic and cultural backgrounds, I am more sensitive and accommodating to the needs of ESL learners, especially those from Confucian heritage cultures. I feel passionate about inspiring my (adult) ESL learners to develop their Intercultural Competence at large and communicative competence in English in specific, cashing in on their own linguistic and cultural heritages. I insist on teaching the "art of fishing" instead of giving the "fish" itself. I also take a positive approach to "rote-learning" such as digesting and memorizing classics as means of linguistic data collection as a solid foundation for English improvement, among other things.
