About DEVON

I have spent the better part of my life in the business world working for start-ups and corporations where leadership, entrepreneurial practice, and creative innovation played a role in all areas of the industry! It was a wonderful experience and opened my eyes to a great many things where business, creativity, time management, and where leading leaders or creating the leaders of tomorrow were involved!

I have also spent over 30 years working with teenagers as an athletic coach across a wide variety of athletic activities (football, soccer, baseball, basketball, girl's fast pitch softball, and nearly 15 years as a martial arts instructor). Most recently I have been coaching Middle School and High School Soccer and have enjoyed every aspect of this experience!

As a Certificated Math Teacher with an additional CTE Certificate for teaching Business & Marketing, Leadership, and Entrepreneurial courses, I have found my calling which inevitably (as luck would have it) is tied to working with teenagers! Go figure!

I love my role and I am excited each day for the connections that will be made with tomorrow's leaders that each day provides! And I am excited to do it from a place that my wife and I now call home -- Costa Rica!

About the lesson

Connecting to students and learning about their needs is one of my greatest gifts and most enjoyable tasks as a teacher, tutor, and soccer coach! I have a sense of humor, and approach life and my connections openly with a clear, consistent, and transparent communication style. I do not simply teach a subject or lesson, I consider the whole student and adapt my lesson plans to meet individual needs and learning styles.

Each lesson is dependent upon the need and/or the challenge that each student might be facing. I like to begin with early communication (prior to our first lesson) to identify where the student's individual needs and expectations within the tutoring program. By deriving a complete understanding of where the student is coming from and what that student hopes to achieve, a lesson plan schedule can be created for maximum mutual success.

Once such understanding has been achieved, each following lesson will generally follow a similar path:

1. Introduction to the topic
2. A real world example of the topic
3. Some examples and explanations followed by "I do" -- "we do" -- "you do" interactions
4. And some follow up that will lead to some at-home practice problems that can be turned in prior to our next visit for me to evaluate progress and derive the next targeted subject or topic in the planning process

I focus on Middle school mathematics Grades 6, 7, & 8 as well as 9th & 10th Grade High School Algebra & Geometry, and 11th Grade Pre-Calculus.

Secondarily, I also am CTE certificated to teach Business & Marketing, Leadership, and Entrepreneurial courses at the High School level. (If you have interest in any of these, please contact me to discuss your need).

Packages are available to meet once, twice, or three times a week, as needed, to discuss the week's lessons, pain-points, and to prepare for upcoming assessments. The intent of this process is not to simply be an hourly role player, but to be a partner in your son or daughter's desire to improve skills in mathematics or business -- Meeting each student where that student is and addressing all needs to get them into a more positive position no matter what class may be involved!

INTERVIEWS are now open -- If what you are looking for is a partner in your child's development as a student who will be with you for a semester or for the 2024-25 school year -- Then we should talk to see if we are a good fit for one another!

*** $48/Hour -- 1 Session Per Week!
*** $42/Hour -- 2 Sessions Per Week
*** $40/Hour -- 3 Sessions Per Week

All of the above are rates for individual students. Quarterly, Semi-Annual-Annual Commitments are also available -- If you are interested, let me know!

GROUP RATES ARE ALSO POSSIBLE -- If you have a classroom or group of students who would like to participate together, and if this is something you are interested in, then let's discuss to see if it is a good fit for everyone (Rates To Be Determine Based on Subject and Group Size).
