About Dalene

I have a B.A Honours Degree in French and English, plus the Higher Diploma in Education IV. My experience as a Secondary School teacher spans well over a decade, within South Africa as well as in England.

My first joint publication was for an Educational publisher (Zigzag Education in Bristol) which was a study guide on Shakespeare's 'The Tempest'. My involvement was the summarising of scenes within the play, as well as compiling the Glossary of Terms. I have recently self-published (on Amazon Kindle) a book titled 'How the Wildflowers Grow'.

I prefer online tuition however, where necessary I may adjust my preferences. I believe in development and progress through encouragement, praise and interactive learning. I am very comfortable with online platforms as it is easy to cross-reference within a very short space of time.

My emails are checked throughout each day, and I respond as soon as I am able, usually within the very minute where possible. I have public school teaching experience, private tuition to children in foster care (in the UK) French-English-Afrikaans translation and court interpreting, 1 year of Primary (Grade 2) teaching and 1 year of adult Matric classes. This is alongside my 10 years years of teaching at public schools. As a class teacher I also helped prepare pupils on HOW to prepare for examinations. This is because apart from teaching a subject, children are never really taught skills for optimal learning and preparation for examinations. We are simply told 'study this or that'.

There are proven methods for optimal study as we all learn differently in relation to who we are. Taking all of this into account, it is the rule for me to take even reluctant learners, to enjoy the benefits of success.

In my lessons I use universally sound principles in breaking up the lesson into 'chewable chunks' as the brain (according to scientific research) can only focus intently for twenty minutes at a stretch. So I usually divide my lessons into several parts.

The first ten minutes there is a 'recap' from the previous lesson, just easy informal conversational style to draw the pupil into the lesson. Once that is accomplished, the new material is introduced.

For the next twenty minutes, interactive engaging is carried out to ensure everyone is on the same level of understanding of this new material being taught.

Thereafter, a different twenty-minute session unfolds through a little independent exercise to check the student's understanding. This is then checked and corrected together (in so doing, ironing out any remaining creases in the understanding process).

The last ten minutes the homework task is discussed to check that pupils understand what is required of them before going off to tackle it independently.

Details

The age groups I teach cover Primary School up to Matric and I have experience teaching adults who are returning to obtain their matric certificate. English is offered as a First or Additional Language. The rate at which I charge depends on the age / ability of the learner. Children of a primary school age pay only R120 (one hundred and fifty rands) up to age 10. Age 12-14 costs R230 and everyone over this age will pay the advertised rate of R300 per hour.

I realise that it is higher than the average, however, I do have somewhat more than average to offer. Travel fees will be applied if you need me to come to you, otherwise, lessons at my premises are an option. Online tuition is great provided you have a secure internet connection (as I do). Thanks, and hope to hear from you soon. Dalene
