About Benjamin
I am a qualified teacher and Durham University languages graduate with more than 13 years’ teaching and tutoring experience. I speak German at near-native C1 level and have taught over 14,000 lessons.
I have worked at Sherborne School and Institut auf dem Rosenberg in Switzerland, where I taught languages and supported pupils through demanding British and international courses and examinations. I offer German tuition from beginner level through GCSE, A-Level, IB, and undergraduate study, including support across the major UK examination boards.
I help students develop secure grammar, accurate pronunciation, confident speaking, strong comprehension, and precise writing. My lessons are carefully adapted to the student’s course, current level, interests, and particular obstacles. Whether a student needs to rebuild weak foundations or is aiming for the highest examination grades, I teach the language systematically while ensuring that it remains alive and enjoyable.
My approach combines academic rigour with calm encouragement. I identify precisely what is limiting progress, explain difficult material clearly, and give students repeated opportunities to apply new language successfully. I always aim to make lessons enjoyable as well as challenging.
As a former England international athlete, I also understand the importance of preparation, resilience, and performing confidently under pressure.

Lessons are individually planned around the student’s current level, examination board, target grade, and particular areas for improvement. The first appointment establishes the student’s confidence and attainment across speaking, listening, reading, writing, vocabulary, and grammar.
I combine clear explanation with extensive guided practice. Students learn new language in manageable stages, retrieve it repeatedly, and gradually use it in longer and more spontaneous speech and writing. Grammar is taught explicitly and then applied through conversation, translation, comprehension, sentence building, and carefully chosen texts.
For GCSE, A-Level, and IB students, lessons remain closely aligned with the relevant specification. We develop accurate and ambitious language, improve examination technique, practise speaking and written responses, and address precisely where marks are being lost. Students receive clear correction without losing the confidence needed to communicate freely.
Lessons are suitable for younger learners, secondary pupils, examination candidates, university students, and committed adult learners. In-person appointments are a minimum of 90 minutes, allowing sufficient time for substantial teaching, guided practice, conversation, and review.

I met Ben when studying my A-levels, during which he taught me history. Without hesitation, Ben was the tutor I felt closest to throughout my studies, which makes him stand out among all the teachers I have had through multiple schools and qualifications.
Foremost, Benjamin is a teacher who really values and emphasises the process of learning. He is deeply interested in it, which is very much felt during his lessons. To this I may add that he has a rare but important ability to read the room, both academically, in terms of how well I was grasping the topic, but also on a personal one. This ability to feel my academic progress was very important, as my circumstances placed me on a very tight schedule for mastering my course. The personal connection during the lessons, in combination with Ben's lively and engaging delivery of content, meant that a lesson with him never felt like a chore, but rather something I was often looking forward to. Specifically, it was an interesting challenge when turning in any writing or research I had done for discussions, as it always proved difficult, in an academically positive way, to fully defend my work for Ben, as he would find ways or approaches to push me to greater expertise on a topic. This made our time together extremely valuable, as our lessons never bogged down in a simple explanation of the topic, but instead into sophisticated deep-rooted and structural-level understanding even to the point of knowing why a topic is taught in a specific way.
I can therefore wholeheartedly endorse Benjamin to anyone who wishes for their lessons to feel like a passionate discussion with a friend, yet who still wishes to achieve the academic progress they desire, thanks to Ben's ability to gently yet appropriately push his students to great heights.Benjamin and I taught together several years ago, and we have stayed in touch to talk teaching. I worked as school director and his direct supervisor. I was impressed by the passion, dedication, adaptability, and knowledge he brought to his work. Benjamin's experience is broad, which helps him excel in unusual situations that might unsettle other teachers. He is especially good at winning skeptical young students over.
Benjamin is an excellent teacher, and I heartily recommend him.I have known Benjamin for a long time (and we have shared names even longer!) and benefitted from his patient and expert tutoring, particularly in languages and critical thinking.
