Learning German can improve your quality of life

Learning German can enhance your mind. It will enhance your memory, your problem solving skills, it will enhance your creative thinking capacities and your verbal and spatial abilities. German education is a great complement to your life and your health.

Education of any language exposes you to another culture and a way of life, giving you perspective and appreciation for cultures that you may not have been entirely familiar with. It will also make you appreciate people who are bilingual who have done the work of learning your language and you may see the effort behind it.

Finally, learning a new language, such as German, can make your brain bigger. Bilingual people have shown growth on the cerebral cortex and the hippocampus. Data also shows that people who speak more than one language enjoy higher incomes as a result of increased professional opportunities.

Employers are always looking for workers who have gotten some type of foreign language education. Jobs are quite demanding, especially if they are international, and so are their requirements.

Learning German has a lot of benefits. Taking German lessons with a teacher is now easier than ever using platforms such as Superprof. Lessons can be via webcam and they can use material that is found online. Learning with a teacher will keep you focused and motivated and it is a great opportunity to see for yourself the benefits of this new skill.

Learning German using videos online

There is a great channel on Youtube that you can use to learn German online. It is called learning German with Anja. Just like her channel, there are many others that you can check out and test if they fit what you are looking for.

However, the problem with learning with channels on Youtube is that at a certain point your level will require specific exercises and a lesson tailored to your needs.

Learning with a teacher is a good option. You can meet with a teacher for an hour a week and you can have a lesson specific to your goals and needs. The German tutor can help you define these goals as well if they are not very well defined on your end.

Learning with a German teacher is a great way of committing to your learning. Since you are meeting with someone on a weekly basis, your consistency will improve.

If you are looking for a German teacher to start lessons with, visit Superprof and check out the long catalog of German teachers online.

Differences between German and English

If you are an English speaker and you are learning German, you may be introduced to a series of different elements that are part of the German language that are not necessarily found in English education.

Gender in words, for example, is one major difference between German and English. Each word has a gender, feminine, masculine and sometimes neutral that will have to be in accordance with its adjective and its article. This is a common feature of romance languages, but also in German, which is not a romance language, but a germanic language.

German also introduces cases. Articles are always based on cases, and they might change based on the case of the sentences. The cases in German are four: nominative, accusative, dative and genitive. So nouns have gendered articles, and plural nouns also have articles that change depending on the case.

Another big difference that might actually be easier than English is that in German we pronounce everything; in other words, there are no silent letters.

Just like French, Spanish and many others, German uses the verb “to have” to refer to some states such as being hungry, thirsty, and many others.

Finally, there might be different pronunciations that you might not be familiar with. The German “r” might end up being a challenge, but once learned it will open the door to other languages such as French.

German vowels are similar to the English ones, as they are several and usually they are not pure ones like in Spanish or Japanese. This might be a common point between the two languages; however, you will be introduced to nasal sounds that might be new to you. And unfortunately German vowels may sound the same as the English ones, but they may not be written the same way.

All of these differences are best to be addressed with some guidance. Learning with a German teacher.
