About Katy
My name is Katy and I'm an energetic and passionate advocate for teaching new languages.
As a fluent Spanish, intermediate French, and native English speaker I'm aware of the challenges and nuances that come with learning a new language. Empathy, encouragement, and patience all come into play when leading the learning process and I make sure those values are at the forefront of the lessons I teach.
When I'm not tutoring I love to exercise creative outlets like guitar, pottery, and dancing. I also share a love for reading which I like to incorporate into my lessons.
I have over 6 years of teaching experience, a combination of a formal classroom setting, private tutoring, and volunteering.
Formal classroom experience was done through Schools of Hope where I got the chance to lead language arts lessons and art classes to middle school students grades 6-8. Throughout college I volunteered through programs like the Literacy Network where I had a very rewarding opportunity to work with both at risk students and adults.
In 2020 I received a TEFL certification in addition to a Bachelors of Arts in Communication, with a minor in Education.

When I teach, my methodology is individualized for each lesson, but typically split into three parts. Vocabulary, listening, and application - you can also think of this as writing, listening, and speaking. Another thing to note is that my lessons are 80% engagement and 20% lecture as I've noticed passive learning is not as effective as participative learning. My aim is that my students not only learn, but also enjoy the process of learning, so that they'll want to put forth the effort needed to become fluent.
