About Kirsten
My qualifications include a PhD in American Studies from Washington State University and a TESOL Certificate from Coventry House International in Toronto. I have twelve years of university teaching experience, including two years in Ukraine with the US Peace Corps from 2017-2019. On request, I will happily provide previous student evaluations and/or scans of my diplomas.

I work both with native English speakers and English-language learners. Our lessons are a safe, relaxed space for you to work on new skills. We will use materials that focus on your personal goals and interests with opportunities for you to speak and participate actively. After each lesson, you will receive notes that review our discussion and suggest optional homework. Future lessons will build on earlier lessons to help you remember and improve.
I can help you with grammar, vocabulary, history, literature, public speaking techniques, pronunciation, and English as a foreign language (ESL/EFL). As a published author and university writing instructor, I also specialize in teaching academic, professional, and business writing. If you want to improve your writing for exams, assignments, publications, or business communications, we can work to improve your skills and confidence. You are welcome to suggest your own lesson topics or materials.

Details
If you need complex help with document editing that will require me to spend several hours reading and commenting on your work outside the lesson (for example, if you need help with your entire master's thesis or you are preparing your scholarly article for professional publication in a journal), I charge the same rates per hour for document feedback as for tutoring--$35 per hour or $30 per hour if you are booking me for ten hours or more. However, this is an uncommon situation that usually occurs when students need to publish their work, not for regular high-school or university-level tutoring.
