I believe in this format for learning music:
Learn a rhythm instrument such as piano or guitar or bass . This will get students acquainted with chord theory.
Learn a lead instrument such as trumpet, harmonica or guitar. This will get students acquainted with improvisation.
When I was learning I made my way through a Beatles chord book, learning to sing along while dissecting the how's and why's of each chord change and melody.
Ultimately, my instruction leads towards writing and composition, with an emphasis on cooperation and coordination with other musicians.
