About Chris

I'm a world traveler who has spent many years in the legal field. Since the pandemic, I've tried to remain in jobs that don't require as much in-person contact so that I avoid catching Covid. For many years, I've wanted to teach English abroad. When I was laid off from my job, I eventually became an Uber Eats driver, and I have a lot of fun doing it. But I've so wanted to teach ESL, and now that I have the flexibility to do it, I'm jumping in to this new adventure and hope to do it for a long time and meet a lot of great students along the way. I love learning about other cultures and countries I've never been to, and I look forward to having you as my student.

About the lesson

My classes are for English learners that are at an intermediate level, capable of carrying on conversations in English but need a little bit of coaching on pronunciation and grammatical structure.

I believe the best way to learn is to have a mix of structured and unstructured conversations. Sometimes, you'll have an article to read that will set the conversation. Other times, we'll have an open ended discussion that isn't planned. Not only is this true to life, but also it will prepare you for having any kind of conversation in English, even those where you have no knowledge of the topic.

What I will do different as a tutor in terms of pronunciation is use my experience playing music to help you say the word correctly. I also utilize similar sounding words that are less complex to help guide you to the correct pronunciation. If there's a trick to saying the word, I will tell you. A lot of times, approaching the pronunciation from a different perspective makes all the difference.

Grammar can be tricky, but when it comes to speaking, some rules can be relaxed that you wouldn't relax in the written word. People don't speak in perfect English, but you must follow the rules of basic sentence structure when speaking. My approach here is to explain the rule to you when you make a mistake and give you any tips I can think of that would help make it easier to remember. Repetition of the correct usage is also an effective tool, but having a good understanding of the rules is the best way to overcome grammatical errors.

I also believe in making the classes as fun as possible. When the lesson is fun, students remember better. Let's have some great conversations.
