Nicholas is a respected tutor in our community. He is highly recommended for his commitment and the quality of his lessons. An excellent choice to progress with confidence.
About Nicholas
I have taught NCEA 1 maths to a Year 9 student, whom I also helped prepare for UNSW ICAS tests, and also her sister in Year 6 maths. I am currently teaching a Year 7 student to understand and apply underlying concepts so she can be confident in her maths learning at school. I am a qualified primary school teacher, though my classroom students were intellectually disabled and learning early childhood maths. I have a PhD in experimental psychology and tutored in statistics and probability for psychology students. I also ran workshops in maths for gifted and talented children aged from 8 to 12 (in Jean Hendy-Harris's Holiday Seminars). Other workshops I taught include ciphers and deciphering, visual perception (including linear perspective drawing), and orienteering.

With primary and intermediate school students, I consult with the student's teacher so my tutoring is closely linked to school learning. Sessions for Year 9 students are closely tied to NCEA Level 1 and current learning at school. All students learn to understand and apply underlying concepts to learning at school, and to use effective problem-solving strategies. They are also encouraged to think for themselves and to talk about learning and problem-solving. Homework is carefully organized so it reinforces the most recent learning, as well as carefully challenging generalization of that learning to applied settings.

Perfect! Nicholas is a really kind and encouraging teacher. The messages sent during the week between lessons she completes online really motivates her to do maths every day or two. We appreciate the extra effort he is taking to make sure she flourishes in maths.
Perfect! Nicholas is a hugely passionate maths tutor. He has taken the time to work out what level my daughter is at and focus on what is needed to really understand the basics, which are not always basic. My daughter warmed to him instantly and has continued to comment on his patience, something that is very important to help her confidence.
- Cadence was eager to learn, build confidence, and eliminate anxiety. To do so, she needs to clearly understand basic concepts in maths and utilize this knowledge when problem solving. Today we focused on articulating what (A) a fraction is; (B) what 1.00, 0.10, and 0.001 means; (C) that multiplication and division are reversible operations, as are also addition and subtraction. Ask Cadence to use the information onNicholas's response :
the whiteboard to explain to you about fractions, decimals and reversible operations. Get her to do this a few times over the next few days. She should also copy this information onto small piece of paper and stick in the back of her maths book so she can remember to check it each time she has to work with a fraction, decimals in the tenths and hundredths, or with multiplication or division (ie., working out equivalent fractions or simplifying them). I will prepare some exercises for her to practice (1) checking the information and (2) using a simple procedure to guide Cadence's use of this information. For any practice session, you should check that Cadence is doing the first few problems correctly and ensuring she understands the correct process before leaving her to work on the rest independently. Once she has finished you should supervise her checking her work; and where she has had difficulty, explore with her what the correct approach is, then get her to redo it. This process will support Cadence develop confidence. Please let me know how much time there is for this practice (both for her and your husband) as it is better too little done well rather too much rushed in a panic.
