About Joe

I have been teaching and tutoring A Level Politics for nearly 20 years and currently teach at a top independent school. I am also a current examiner for both Pearson Edexcel and AQA, giving me an unusually detailed understanding of how A Level Politics is assessed and what separates a good answer from a top-mark answer.

I have a degree in Politics, Philosophy and Economics (PPE) from the University of Oxford, a Master's degree and a PGCE. I have Qualified Teacher Status.

Over the years, I have helped students of all abilities improve by several grades. I believe that success in A Level Politics is about much more than simply mastering the content (although I can help with this too). Knowing your material is essential, but the real challenge is learning how to turn that knowledge into a well-structured, analytical and highly rewarded exam answer.

I specialise in all areas of A Level Politics, including political ideologies, UK politics, US politics and global politics. My approach is highly personalised: we identify exactly where you are currently losing marks and then focus on the changes that will have the greatest impact on your results.

My aim is simple: to help you become a more confident Politics student and, ultimately, to turn your knowledge into higher marks.

About the lesson

No two students are the same, so every lesson is tailored to your individual needs, ability and goals. We will quickly identify your strengths and the areas where improvements can make the biggest difference to your grade.

A major focus of my teaching is essay and exam technique. We can write essay plans together, improve previous answers, practise developing arguments and evaluation, and think strategically about how to approach different types of exam questions.

I also offer detailed feedback on work completed between lessons. You can end me essays, plans or other work and I will mark it carefully, explain where you can gain or lose marks, and provide clear and supportive next-step advice.

The aim is not simply to cover more content. We will develop this too but the main goal is to make sure that you know how to use what you know in the way the exam rewards.

Your first lesson is completely free and comes with no commitment. It is an opportunity for us to discuss your goals, look at your current work and establish how I can best help you improve.

I had Joe as a tutor for almost the entirety of sixth form, from after my first couple of tracking tests in year 12. Within a few months of tuition, Joe had been a huge part in improving my grade from a D in the early parts of year 12 to a B just a few months later in my year 12 mocks. He is extremely good at explaining and breaking down tough essay questions and political knowledge so that you have a genuine understanding of the content in the course. In addition to this, he is an excellent communicator and is able to outline a clear and concise essay structure for students to follow, which was the thing I struggled most with and debatably the most challenging part of A-level politics. I honestly couldn’t recommend Joe enough as both a tutor and a person as he has all the necessary attributes to assist students of any ability to develop a coherent understanding of A-level politics. If I were to rate Joe out of 10, it would be a 9. The one dropped mark is due to the unfortunate fact he is indeed a Spurs fan, perhaps his only flaw as a teacher! Highly recommend.
