The six levels of German - A1 to C2 - describe how much you can understand and express.

• A1 and A2: cover basic phrases, everyday vocabulary, and simple daily conversations.
• B1 and B2: mark independent use, where learners can discuss familiar topics and hold longer conversations.
• C1 and C2: represent advanced and near-native fluency, including nuance and complex topics.
• Common target: B2 is often considered the threshold for comfortable, fluent conversation.

Understanding this scale makes it easier to choose the right course or resources.

German tutors in Wellington typically charge $35/h per hour.

Several factors influence the price:

• Your current level (beginner, intermediate, advanced)
• The tutor's experience and qualifications
• The package you choose (one-off or regular)
• Where the sessions take place

Most teachers offer a free trial lesson so you can test their approach.

Learning German independently is easier when you prioritise high-frequency vocabulary early on.

• High-frequency vocabulary: learning the most common nouns and verbs covers most everyday conversations.
• Daily practice: short, consistent sessions build retention better than occasional long study blocks.
• Speaking practice: talking with native speakers, even briefly, builds confidence fast.
• Grammar foundations: understanding sentence structure early makes everything else click faster.

Combining self-study with occasional guided lessons often gives the best results.
