About Sean
Sean Vigneau-Britt is a jazz pianist, composer, and teacher. He composes using a broad stylistic palette that includes work for musicians, theater directors, and choreographers. He co-founded the Brooklyn Composers Alliance and authored the book "Jazz Scales." He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Sarah Lawrence College and a Master of Music degree from Brooklyn College Conservatory.
Sean studied classical piano at the Hartt School of Music in Hartford, CT. He studied jazz piano and trumpet at Concord Academy, where he also studied music theory, Western music history, and jazz arranging.
At Sarah Lawrence College he studied composition, performance (piano, trumpet, guitar), theory (classical and jazz), Western music history, ethnomusicology, electronic music, and conducting. He studied jazz composition, arranging, theory, sight singing, and performance for a semester at the Bill Evans Piano Academy in Paris, France. During his last year at Sarah Lawrence he received the Presser Foundation Fellowship for outstanding achievement in music.
After working in San Francisco, CA, as a professional jazz pianist and private piano teacher, Sean moved to Brooklyn, NY, to work as a freelance composer. He received a Master of Music degree in composition from Brooklyn College Conservatory of Music, where he composed for ensembles of all sizes, from solo cello to full orchestra. He received the Morton Feldman Award in Composition and the Nancy Hager Music History Prize.
Sean currently teaches music, works as a pianist and composer, and has co-founded the Brooklyn Composers Alliance.

I bring to lessons an expansive education in music performance, theory, and composition in different styles, as well as the ability to explain and display the necessary skills in a variety of ways for a diversity of learning styles.
I teach an aggressive curriculum, but one that is tailored to each student's individual strengths and weaknesses, and I always remain gentle and patient while guiding my students through the rewarding process of learning to create music.
