About Heather
Professional communicator in Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM) with 25 years+ of experience using the English language in all forms. I have a Teaching English as a Second Language diploma, two undergraduate degrees (including journalism) and a graduate degree.
I have experience teaching children, youth and adults at all Canadian Language Benchmark levels. I teach in-person or online; individually or small groups. There is a modest transportation fee for sessions in your home.
I teach conversational, academic (K-12 and university) and business English in the four skill areas: listening; speaking; reading; and writing. Also, I assist new Canadians with preparing for citizenship, and job hunters with creating Canadian-style resumes and cover letters, and getting ready for job interviews.
My students say I am patient and like my engaging, supportive style of helping them improve their English.

I start with an assessment of English skills and discuss students' goals and needs. This information is used to plan structured lessons that align with Canadian Language Benchmarks.
Assessments are also done at regular intervals to ensure students are progressing as planned. Adjustments to the learning plan are made as needed.
I also include some flexibility during lessons to address urgent or timely needs (e.g., upcoming job interview or academic essay due) and opportunities (e.g., discussion about a recent vacation or start of school) that may arise.
I use a variety of teaching tools to ensure students are engaged and have fun.
