About Tessa

I love teaching English and working with people from around the world. I have lived in a few Latin American countries for a few months at a time where I interacted only in Spanish with the locals. These were some of my favorite experiences because I learned a lot about cross-cultural understanding and the process of learning a new language. I have taught all levels of English as a Second Language to students from all over the world, as well as advanced reading and writing and TOEFL preparation in my school's university preparation program. I have taught students one-on-one, as well as in classes of various sizes. I have completed my bachelor's degree in modern literature and master's degree in social work, as well as the first part of my TESOL certificate. I have also completed all of the work for the second part of my certificate, and I am waiting for its review from my professors. I speak and write conversational/fluent Spanish, having learned it from a young age, as well as practiced it while traveling. I have also learned a little bit of Japanese in the past. I believe that lots of practice should accompany instruction, which will naturally include the making of errors. I correct errors in an open and encouraging manner. I make learning fun and interesting, as well appropriate for the students' proficiency level. Including fun activities is a must, because it not only makes class more enjoyable, but helps students remember what they learned, by creating an emotional connection to the material. I always take into account the students' comfort level and make sure to listen to their needs and adjust accordingly.

I really enjoy making my lessons creative and fun, while making sure that I teach the crucial information needed. I have taught all levels, from beginner to advanced, and I know what is needed for each level. I know that practice is extremely important, and that creating a human connection to the language helps the best with learning. I like to start off my classes with casual conversation, then teach vocabulary and grammar, and after that, give students the chance to use what they've learned in a way that ignites their interest. For example, learning about horoscope signs and giving students the chance to write horoscope predictions for each other is a great way to teach adjectives and the simple future tense. We can talk about how Libras are empathetic and compassionate, and how their horoscope might say that in the coming year they will get married or start a new job. I encourage students to risk making mistakes, because that is how we learn, and I provide correction when needed without using shame or embarrassment. I look forward to meeting you and teaching you, if you would like to work together!
