About Jonathan

I am a 22-year-old college student from Kenya currently studying audio production at Harris Institute. Music has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. I grew up diving into every music-related extracurricular I could find, later completed a sound engineering course at Africa Digital Media Institute, and moved from Nairobi to Toronto to build my music career. I've spent over 15 years practicing piano and studying music theory, about 10 on guitar, and 7 producing with Logic Pro. Along the way, I’ve performed in church bands, orchestras, rock fusion bands, solo recitals, and accompanied vocalists across a wide range of genres. I'm passionate and dedicated to music, and that comes through in the way I teach. My goal is to help students discover and develop their musical voice—whether that means learning to play songs they love, writing original material, or just having fun with the instrument. I’m here to support that journey and help unlock whatever potential each student brings to the table.

About the lesson

My teaching approach is rooted in flexibility, curiosity, and creativity. I assess each new student’s level, interests, and goals, then build a customized plan that balances technical growth with musical enjoyment. Whether it’s piano, guitar, music theory, or Logic Pro, lessons are shaped around what inspires you—from improvising and creating your own chord progressions to learning your favorite songs by ear.

For complete beginners, I start with foundational music theory—major and minor scales and chords—so students understand what they're playing from the start. We then dive into songs they enjoy, gradually introducing more complex scales, chord voicings, techniques, and theory concepts as we work on increasingly sophisticated material.

With 15+ years of performance experience and a strong foundation in theory, I specialize in helping students train their ears and develop their relative pitch so they can play what they hear, write what they imagine, and collaborate with confidence. My strength lies in quickly learning and teaching songs by ear, and showing students how to do the same, building fast recall, strong improvisational instincts, and songwriting versatility.

Learning guitar tablature, melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic dictation is an option I offer, though it’s not a primary focus unless a student wants to pursue it—my approach is not classical or test-based

I teach beginner to intermediate students age 5 and up, whether you're brand new or looking to deepen your craft as a performer, songwriter, or producer.
