About Joshua
I have a B.S. in Mathematics from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and several years of math tutoring experience. I first worked for the university's free tutoring service in one-on-one sessions with students in algebra, trigonometry, pre-calculus, geometry, and calculus classes. My ratings in this position were always high and students often commented that they felt comfortable asking me any questions that they did not want to ask in class. Following this position, I worked for the department of mathematics directly, serving as a grader and a tutor, where I led both individual and group sessions for the same classes listed earlier. As someone who has tutored students of nearly all backgrounds and levels, I am confident in my ability to create tutoring environments that inspire confidence and reduce student anxiety surrounding the wonderful subject of mathematics!

Students will find my sessions to be highly conversational as we work together to develop conceptual understanding and solve problems. Therefore, rather than repeat the lectures given by teachers, I prefer to focus tutoring sessions on information synthesis and application. This approach is far more effective in helping students to develop independent learning techniques that will serve them well in the future. Typical lessons will begin with a few minutes of diagnostics where we review the current material and determine where any misconceptions lie. Then, depending on the topic and level of understanding, we can either spend some time review the general concepts or jump right into practice problems. As many teachers like to say, "math is not a spectator sport," so working through problems together will be an integral part of each session. During this time, I like to ask students guiding questions and encourage them to explore their curiosities about the subject, which reinforces learning and builds confidence.
I am passionate about mathematics, and I think that my ability to make math interesting and enjoyable for students is what sets me apart from other tutors. I can tutor high school and college students in the following classes:
