About Katie

Hi there!

I'm Katie, a 2nd year Philosophy student at KCL with a passion for teaching, learning and connecting with people.
I take a positive and fun approach to my lessons with the goal being to get you speaking as much as possible, as soon as possible.

Currently I am taking my TEFL 160hr course, and should be qualified by April 2021. Besides this, I have worked 1 on 1 with a student for 9 months doing conversation practice, vocabulary building and accent reduction.
We met twice a week for an hour, with the first 10 minutes going over any new words/phrases we learnt in the last lesson, then 30 mins of conversation practice, followed by 15 minutes reviewing anything that he'd struggled with and 5 mins of questions. Sometimes we'd do reading instead on conversation, or watch news/YouTube/music videos and break them down. I encourage students to make notes of interesting 'material' they find through the week and we can watch and learn from it together in session!

In 2017 I also spent one month teaching English to children aged between 6-11 at ECC Elementary school in Cambodia, so i have experience with complete beginners also.

Personally I speak conversational Portuguese and am currently learning Italian, so I know it's always easier when you're learning about things you're interested in! That's why in my first lesson I will assess your level and ask about you, your interests, and why you want to learn/improve your English. After that, I will tailor lessons to you and talk about the topics you love.

I'm happy to practice conversation and listening with all levels and am a super patient teacher. If you prefer, I can also teach a more structured approach with materials to help you with grammar. However, the goal is to encourage you to speak as much English as possible!

About the lesson

My approach to teaching is based on conversation and listening as that is how you build your working memory of a language. Being comfortable expressing yourself in a way that is tailored to you is so important. That is why my lessons are structured in a way that reiterates your language 'set'; the way and words most suitable for you!

Lots of research has been done into how its the fastest way to learn a language. Below is a link to one of the best videos I've watched on language acquisition rather than learning, where a teacher learns Arabic in one year ….

I always change my structure, material and lessons to meet the student's desired goals.
Sometimes we could be translating English songs, or explaining English texts and videos. We can also practice situations like interviews, or speaking exams if you have a deadline or interview coming up. Other times we can just practice oral and listening skills in free conversation or perhaps go over grammar exercises.
