About Kathryn
Teaching Philosophy

My philosophy of teaching is that learning is an experiential process that is active. It is growth-producing, continuous, dynamic and lifelong. I view teaching as a deliberate endeavor to guide a learning situation in order to bring about desired learning outcomes. I believe that my goal as a professional nursing educator is to provide experiences for my students to become skilled, mature and responsible practitioners of nursing who arrive at independent, complex judgments through critical thinking. The judgments made by the nurses I teach should be based on accurate and complete data coupled with knowledge and grounded in nursing theory.
My teaching philosophy encourages and embraces flexibility and creativity in learning as well as teaching. I espouse the Lerner-centered approach to teaching. A learner-centered approach is characterized by a collaborative relationship between the teacher and students where all participants are actively engaged in the content and process of learning. Additionally, teachers must seek ways to create and maintain climates which are conducive to learning, cultivate student support, provide an environment for teacher-student interaction, and foster buy-in. The student’s available past experiences, individual needs, and environmental conditions and content to be learned all should influence my teaching methodology.
In my nursing career I had opportunities to teach/train other nurses. As a health coach, teaching was expected and required.
Extensive Nursing experience. Teleheath nursing as a health coach and an MSN degree with an education specialization.

I first engage the student to try and determine their strengths and weaknesses. I gauge what they are interested in learning and what they find difficult. From there, I develop a teaching/learning strategy that will be most beneficial for the individual student. Each student has an individual learning style and it is important to understand what style that student needs to succeed.
Professional learners
Look for a teacher who is willing to engage and explore the learning style the student has and what topics and areas they have strengths in as well as weaknesses.
