About Mat

I took my first paying client as a tutor when I was 13 years old - she was an adult returning learner who was having difficulty in her College Algebra course, and the process of guiding her through the concepts and techniques involved was one of the most fulfilling things I'd experienced up to that point.

Since then, I've continuously developed and refined my method of Inquiry Based Learning (IBL), which is designed to provide students with the opportunity to master topics through application, rather than be inundated with mass-produced information dumps that may not be relevant to their needs. I was lucky enough to be taught fundamentals of problem solving and investigation at a young age, and I'm committed to passing on that advantage to students of all ages and interests.

My mother has been working in education as a teacher, tutor, and administrator since the 70s, and I grew up exposed to her pedagogical methods both directly and through observation of how she worked with pupils and clients. My first paying student (taken on when I was 13) was through her reference, and since then I've built a client base of my own wherever I go, through word-of-mouth reviews and online services such as this one.

My first priority when working with a new student is to understand their background: their motivation (why are they taking the course/test, what related things interest them, etc.), their toolset (what knowledge and skills do they have coming in), and their goals in working with me.

Next, as part of the tutoring process, I begin characterizing their learning style and what kinds of problems and techniques best help them engage with the material. Whether a student is a visual learner who benefits most from graphical representation or a hands-on enthusiast who grasps concepts best through manipulation and experimentation, I can tailor my process to make the most efficient use of our time together.

I've worked with students from middle school through middle age, covering subjects from elementary mathematics and grammar, to AP Calculus, Chemistry, and Economics, to preparation for the SAT, ACT, GRE, and other standardized tests, and much more. Whether you're struggling with concepts and recollection of prerequisites or simply looking to solidify your mastery of a new topic, I can provide the keys to open that door for you.

Not long ago, I worked with a young woman who was preparing for the Math section of the SAT and came to me racked with doubt about her general problem solving ability. What I found when we began going over a practice test together was that she had many missing links in her knowledge base (some more obvious than others), but once those were identified, she quickly improved in each topic we touched upon.

Eventually, she admitted to me that in her previous attempts at finding help, she had often felt that tutors were frustrated with her or judgmental in response to her lack of understanding; she thanked me for taking the time to address each issue at her pace rather than expecting things to progress in a predetermined way. This experience really stuck with me, because it's so important to me to acknowledge my students as unique people, and her words (and results!) validated that approach.
