About Cara

I love to help students who need support and I put so much effort into helping with anything. I am very observant of how a student learns and I also tutor using students interests to make learning fun and memorable.

I tutor at a school in San Francisco and I love working with and helping kids. I also tutor at local churches in Oakland for students in low income neighborhoods who do not receive the help and recourses they need. I love to help everyone and I am always putting in 100% effort when working with others.

I first started tutoring younger students when I was in high school. I then got my first job there being a tutor for an 8th grade class which was difficult because it was just me, a junior, watching 17 8th graders alone. When I realized I liked doing this kind work, I started voluntarily tutoring in various places which eventually turned into a business. Now I am in college and I work at an elementary school in SF for work study and I love helping the students. I also worked at a daycare and taught children 3-5 years old, preparing them for school.

About the lesson

I have worked with all kinds of students. I’ve experienced children from all backgrounds and have always been open to everyone. Ive also worked with students with disabilities. My brother, who I help the most, has Autism which helped me understand how different children can be from one another.

An even that I have been very fond of is the teachers protest in the Oakland Unified School District. I found this event important as teachers do not make enough money for the exceptional amount of work they do in schools. I applaud those who have joined these protests and have helped teachers try to better the schools in the Oakland district that don’t get the same resources as other schools in higher income neighborhoods.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Students always come to me asking for help but never specify exactly what they need help with. Sometimes students don’t even know what they need help with because they focus too much on how they are failing at what they want to succeed in. When students ask their teachers for help during office hours, they should think about what subject they are confused in and what specific thing they are having trouble with in that subject. For example, if a student asks me for help in math without saying exactly what topic they need, I won’t know that they need help with long division.
