About Nick

Since my early childhood, before I can remember, I've been playing music on one instrument or another; somewhere around 40 years. I've been playing the guitar for over 30 of them, and teaching it for over 20. My biggest passion for music is in writing, which I've been enjoying for some 30 years too, and I always emphasize when teaching song writing that while there are techniques and industry standards that are important to learn (and I do teach them as part of the lesson plan), there is no "bad" song writing. It's an art in which individual expression means boundaries don't exist, nor does any critique matter more (or really at all, depending on your own feeling towards it) than that of the individual artist. My teaching style focuses on the enjoyment of music for the individual, which means I teach whatever style and whichever songs each student is interested in. For those who don't favor one genre over another, I teach using styles and techniques that cover a wide range of musical styles. That doesn't mean I exclude the essentials. I always include the standard method of playing/singing/writing, so that the student will be fluent and able to fit right into any band, group, or company desired. I teach absolute beginners to those who have an intermediate level of knowledge already and just want to learn more. I teach: Piano/Guitar/Bass/Vocals/Song Writing & Composition. Having fun learning means it's never a chore!

Very little compares to the joy of seeing someone play a song they love (or have written), and being a part of that process is beyond fulfilling for me.

I've been playing the guitar for over 30 years, and have experience playing a number of other instruments as well, including bass guitar, banjo, singing, piano, drums, cello, and baritone horn. I played in a rock band (performing our own, original songs) for over a decade, in which I played guitar, bass guitar, and sang. At this moment I also have an album on iTunes, Amazon, Spotify, and most other music stores.

About the lesson

I ask all new students what their preferred genre is (if they have one), and begin teaching the chords and structures (if learning guitar) comprising one of the student's favorite songs. I provide chord charts, scales, etc., and have a well established routine that's malleable enough to change, to fit each individual student's needs or preferences.

The same technique holds essentially true in teaching vocals and bass guitar. Song writing however, has an obviously different style in which I focus on the element of expression, opinion, viewpoint, and/or whatever the goals of the individual writer happen to be, and teach different ways in which lyricists can evoke picture and feelings through word, and musicians (though they're often one and the same) can do the same with sound, song structure, and the very essential LACK of sound, at times.
