About Marlena

I have studied German for thirteen years.

I acquired a minor in German Language and Literature. Throughout college, I tutored first and second-year German students. Additionally, I am a beginner's German teacher on Outschool. I immerse myself in German culture by reading books and watching movies in German.

I love spreading the German language! It was not widely available when I started studying it and when I fell in love with it, I wanted to dedicate my time to share it.

My favorite thing about tutoring online is that I am able to reach such a far range of students. I have had students from across the United States, Puerto Rico, England, and even American students living in Germany. It has been wonderful teaching all of my students.

I got started teaching because I finally wanted to use my German as a career and after a lot of deliberation, I decided that I wanted to teach. It has been an extremely rewarding career already.

I acquired a minor in German Lamguage and Culture from Northern Illinois University in 2018.

Since March, 2020, I have been a beginner's German tutor on Outschool.com. I also tutored both German and English (complete with paper edits) during my time in college.

About the lesson

My process for working with a new student begins with getting to know them. Knowing my student is important to me because then I can tailor my classes interests and needs. I want to help them succeed in German, and the best of doing this is knowing what works best for them.

I have worked with students aged 4-15, but I am also looking to branch into older teens, college students, and adults.

I would tell a student to be picky. Pick the tutor that best fits your needs, your wants, and is able to teach in a learning method that gets across best!

In one of my current classes on Outschool, I found sets of games that I decided to try with my classes. It made me so proud seeing how engaged my students were. They got extremely competitive, and were excited to use the vocabulary words that they just learned in the games.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Break things down into three categories: what do I understand complete, what do I understand a little, and what do I not understand at all. This helps the teacher tailor sessions so that time is optimized to the student's exact needs.

I usually price my tutoring between $20-$25/hour, depending on the student's language level. All prices are negotiable though!
