About Jakob
Hello,
I'm Jakob. I've been a qualified German private tutor for 18 years. Over the past six years I have also worked as a university fellow. I have successfully prepared students of all levels and all ages for certificates and university exams; for their relocation to a German-speaking country; or I have helped them to gain and improve their competence in the language more generally. Throughout my teaching career, I have brought over one hundred students up to fluency and many more to intermediate level with a unique combination of tailored vocabulary training, solid grammar foundation and my challenging yet motivating teaching style.
Your level and my approach
With beginner students, I start by looking at various ways of expressing simple phrases in German, such as how to introduce yourself and talk about your pastimes. We will then move on to the conjugation of regular verbs, key rules regarding word order and the differences in pronunciation between the German and English alphabet. While building your vocabulary on a range of topics, our main focus will be to keep your sentences simple but correct, before gradually adding complexity as we move along.
One of the difficulties of learning any foreign language, and especially one as challenging as German, is to resist the constant temptation to translate from your mother tongue into German. Not only do literal translations rarely make sense, they also increase the likelihood of mistakes. My solution to this problem is to help my students simplify their ideas, by keeping their focus on German grammar and by checking which words they have at their disposal. The advantages of my approach are grammatical accuracy and confidence in writing and speaking. As soon as my students have developed the flexibility to simplify with ease, we work towards increasing nuance and complexity of their sentences through text work, grammar training and discussions in class.

For each of my German lessons I prepare a text that is tailored to your level and on a topic of your interest, which we will read in the first part of the lesson. In the course of discussing the text, you will pick up around twenty new words in each session. I believe that it needs at least three repetitions for a new word to stick, so I make sure to come back to the new words we learnt and phrase sample sentences to show how the word is used in context.
In the second part of the lesson we will focus on grammar, usually starting with the most important rules concerning the German word order in both main and subordinate clauses. In class as well as at home, you will fill out grammar exercises that will allow you to test what you have learnt. My grammar training has proven to be so successful over the years that I'm currently preparing my material for publication.
At the end of our lesson you will have practiced and improved your conversational skills, picked up new words, and will have learnt about at least one aspect of German grammar. At home, you will then be asked to produce a text that I will correct outside of our lessons. We will therefore cover listening, speaking, reading, writing.
