About Angie

How am I different than others? I truly get students to LISTEN, and work, while making it fun, and effective. This comes from many years of working with deaf students and many individuals with a wide range of concerns and strengths. If you, or your child, are struggling with Language, Literacy, Reading (in particular Dyslexia), or Spelling I have the experience, and system, to help. My 15 plus years in education, as a teacher working with students with hearing loss and English Language Learners, have helped me have a unique understanding of language and literacy. My approach is dependent on the needs of the student. For those with dyslexia I incorporate the Barton Reading and Spelling System which allows us to work one on one at the pace of the student. Vocabulary development, for test taking, and explicit grammar instruction is also available for those in need. While my virtual shutters have not been open for long my years as a certified Teacher for the Deaf, Reading Specialist, TESOL/ELL teacher and Masters Degree in Family Centered Early Intervention, from Fontbonne University, bring a unique depth to my ability to work with diverse learners. I have worked as an Adjunct Instructor, preparing future teachers, Educational Specialist, advocating for families, and Workshop Implementer, and Developer, all through the lense of looking at what is available to modify and empower students. As someone that has raised three children to adulthood I know how busy families are and do know that parents are the expert on their child. I enjoy when I back away and the student is able to not only do something on their own, that was difficult before, but feels confident to share it with others. I enjoy working with different types of learners and seeing them own their learning.

I came to teaching a bit later in life. After having three children and starting my family, with my long-time firefighter husband, I found myself working somewhere that paid well, but was without meaning. At one point, I worked midnights and went to school all day in order to get through college. I was the first woman in my Mother's family to complete a four year degree and was awarded a fully funded Master's program for my efforts. I couldn't have done any of it without the support of family and being convinced that I must keep going. I feel the same with tutoring, I know I must keep going, and that it matters.

I have worked with students with Language and Literacy needs for the past 15 plus years. I have a MA in Early Intervention, from Fontbonne University, which I have used working with families in the birth to three sector as a developmental therapists. I have also worked as a Teacher for the Deaf, and as an ELL Teacher, and am a certified Reading Specialist. I've also assisted in training future teachers as an adjunct instructor, advocated for families as an Educational Consultant and developed and implemented workshops. I have helped many students find strategies, and technology, that work to empower them as learners.

About the lesson

I listen, and give people time to share what they are searching for and what they have tried. My typical process for working with a new student involves hearing from them, or the family, what they are experiencing and learning more about their experiences and goals. I also offer screeners, or assessments, which I feel will work best for the student in order for us to find the strengths and where to start to fill in the gaps. I get to know the students, their interests and work to make learning fun and effective.

The past four years I have worked with ELL students and I tell everyone I know I only work with beautiful, brilliant, children, and my kids know it is in fact true. I have worked with students from one month to college age over the past 15 plus years. The bulk of the students I have worked with have had a language delay, and have struggled with literacy. My classroom experience has primarily been focused in elementary settings, but I've worked with older students as well.

Look for someone that not only knows their stuff but that you click with. Look for someone that finds out what you are interested in, and encourages you, while challenging you to keep going and to advocacte for yourself. Look for someone that helps you find ways to learn and involves technology that you can use on your own. Look for someone that is not there to save you, but to empower you, and make you work, while laughing a bit together.

A recent even I'm fond of...a teacher came to me and said, "That kids is a chatter box. I don't know what you did, but they seriously are raising their hand, working hard, and did really well on their last test." On a personal note, I'm also proud that my youngest, 22 year old son, is at boot camp, and he has put into writing how grateful he is that he was raised well and that he knows we believe in him.

Details

At this time my rates are $50 per 50 minute session. If a student does utilize the Barton Reading and Spelling System it requires two times a week for fidelity. I do ask that families pay prior to sessions, at the beginning of the month, or bi-weekly.
