About Barrie

I've started acting in the Philadelphia area in the early 1990s, then wrote a few plays , the very first of which won an award at the Ritz Theatre's One-Act Play Festival, and took up directing several years later.

Everyone, whether they know it or not, is an actor or actress.

What I do is show you how to build a character, and make that character real, both to you and to your audience.

I've worked with adults and teens, as well as with the theatre program at Gloucester County Institute of Technology.

I enjoy seeing my students enjoy the process, and in doing so, learning more about themselves, and about their acting abilities.

It's a marvelous thing to see my students get the hang of acting, and being able to embody a character whose personality and experience might be light years from their own.

And even though learning to act is work, it's almost always fun work.

I've studied at the Arden Theatre Company, Wilma Theatre, and the Actors Center, and with H. Michael Walls.

I was a member of the Magnet Theatre Company, that existed in Trenton, NJ from 1994-2005.

I've worked in both amateur and professional theartres all over the Philadelphia area.

About the lesson

First and foremost, I want to know exactly what the student is hoping to accomplish: whether becoming a better actor, or working on building a certain character.

From there we develop a plan to get there, before even one line is uttered.

Once the plan nailed down, the real work commences.
