About Matt

As a director and acting coach, I work with actors on a personal level and change tactics depending on circumstance. There are many "methods" out there, but the most important thing is to feel comfortable and connected - no matter how you get there. I have decades in the business, and have both trained and worked in New York, London, and Los Angeles (at New York University, the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, and Director's Lab West) in both theater and film, winning awards in both mediums.

I love seeing people succeed, and when that's connected with seeing actors really locking in and getting a character and scene, it's hugely satisfying. I love to craft work and collaborate.

I began teaching after my Junior year of college - I created a Summer Workshop where high school seniors and college Freshmen did scenework and monologues and ultimately had an evening of Shakespeare work presented at a local theater. From there, I was Assistant Director/teacher at a private school summer program in New Hampshire and since moving to Los Angeles, have been working freelance.

About the lesson

Depending on need, a quick get-to-know-you is followed by jumping right into work. If the student has a project, an upcoming audition, etc., we will review the material together and begin breaking it down and working on it beat-by-beat, delving deeper with each pass. If the student wishes to start from scratch with nothing, I can help suggest materials for them to consider and then bring back to work on.

By day, I teach Kindergarten through eighth grade the basics of acting and drama, by night, I work with adults both new to the business and professionals.

Find someone who works well with you. Don't feel pushed or locked into anything. It's a relationship - sometimes they're right, sometimes you need to move on.

I just wrote and performed in a multi-award-winning play at the Hollywood Fringe Festival called BLACKBOXING, followed by directing a hit play at FORCE OF NATURE Productions in NoHo.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
WHAT and WHY. What is it you are looking to accomplish and why are you looking to do so. Clearly you're looking to improve or to "get the part," etc., but why? What, beyond money, is important about this moment? Ask that about the story and about yourself. Then open up wide and dive in.
