Teaching in general should be done with a variety of learning styles in mind as students all learn differently. Some are visual, others learn by listening or speaking and some by physically participating in an activity. For example, if I was teaching about a grammar concept we would read about it and look at all the rules, do a related listening activity where they need to pick out the grammar points and use it in speaking as part of a role play or dialogue. To engage kinesthetic or hands-on learners I would have them play games involving writing on small white board or perhaps putting the text from a story or article back together.
It is also important to take into consideration what the learner already knows. Adults entering a language class for example are often false beginners, they may have studied English some time ago and some of that learning is still there but they have not had the opportunity to use it so it has become fossilized. Others may be pure beginners and English is brand new for them. My job as a teacher is to present the material in a way that allows students to get back to what learning they may have and build on it. Regardless of level though, it is also important not just to teach the language by reading a text book but to have students engaged in a dynamic classroom environment. Students should be actively involved in their own learning by using the language and participating in realistic tasks. Students should not learn English in isolation; they should be encouraged to use it through experiences outside the classroom or tutoring session and homework tasks that encourage them to use the language in an authentic situation.
