About Tom

I am an ESL (English as a second language) teacher native to Australia. I have been teaching lessons to students of all ages, and from many countries for over the last ten years. I have taught thousands of students over the years, with class sizes ranging from one student (one-on-one private tutoring), right up to over 100 per class (lecture style teaching in China). My students have gone on to study for IELTS, enter Australian universities, and work and live in Australia permanently. Recently one of my past students became an Australian citizen.

I have spent a lot of my life studying other languages, and so I understand the difficulties faced when learning about a new language and culture. I am a proficient speaker of Japanese, and have studied many other languages at a basic to intermediate level over the years. My knowledge of grammar and pronunciation in Chinese, Spanish, Portuguese, Malay, Indonesian, Korean and other languages helps me to support my students in the specific ways they need.

About the lesson

My classes are usually very casual. I have taught formally for many years, but Australian culture is quite informal, and I believe that learning in an informal, friendly, and stress free environment is a good way to learn more about Australian culture, as well as have fun while you are learning.

Although English is an important language for business, study, and testing, it is also a language of music, movies, and international communication. My lessons are focused on enjoying English, and using the language to make your life more interesting and multicultural.

A lesson often takes place in a local cafe or pub (I've even taught "picnic lessons" in the park or at the beach), with a focus on speaking and listening. For beginning students, we might focus on basic grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation. More advanced students usually decide on the topic that they want to study (something they are interested in), and I use this topic to help teach and correct their English.

For students who are more interested in focusing on their reading and writing skills, I am also available. Often these students bring their own textbooks or materials. I am also available as a tutor leading up to exams, presentations, or other stressful occasions where you might need to use English (I helped a student write an English speech for his friend's wedding for example).

Details

A higher rate will be charged for students who want to focus on reading and writing. This will be for text book, printing, and materials costs.

For travel outside the city, there will be a travel charge.

Any cancellations must be made a week in advance. If cancelling within the week, half the cost of the class will be charged, and within 24 hours, the full cost of the class will be charged. A medical certificate or reasonable reason will of course be taken into account.
